Boston Area Gleaners, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing surplus farm crops for people in need. We distribute high quality, local produce to food pantries and meal programs by working closely with farmers, providing volunteer labor to harvest what would otherwise be plowed under.  We are building a reliable supply chain of agricultural surplus to regional food agencies that serve people in need. By organizing volunteers to harvest and sort crops on farms, we have gleaned and donated over 1,000,000 pounds of high quality produce since our founding in 2004.

Job description

Boston Area Gleaners is hiring for two positions for the 2017 Gleaning Season: Gleaning Coordinator and Distribution Assistant. Both positions are temporary full-time from July 6 to December 23. Candidates must commit to working the full duration of the season in order to qualify. 

DISTRIBUTION ASSISTANT
The Distribution Assistant executes the distribution of produce under the direction of the Distribution Program Manager. This role is vital to our operations, as it is the link between our gleaning operations and the agencies that distribute our produce to people in need.

  • Daily activities include filling agency orders at the BAG facility, delivering food to agencies, pickups of produce at partner farms, and maintaining orderly storage facilities and dry storage inventories (packaging). Typical orders may range from small pantry orders (4 cases/50 pounds) to large palletized food bank orders (200 cases/8,000 pounds). This position is vital to our operations team and is expected to contribute to all aspects of our work to achieve our mission.
  • This position is non-exempt and full-time seasonal, with a minimum of 36 hours per week. The expected schedule is Monday-Thursday 8:00-5:30; flexibility is strongly preferred.
  • Compensation will start at $14/hour during one-month training/probation period; upon successful completion, pay rate will be increased based on experience and skill level.

Strong applicants for should be able to prove the following:

  • Must be reliable, committed, and efficient at completing job requirements.
  • Must be effective in communicating with other program staff and partners of the organization.
  • Must have ability and desire to relate to and work with various socio-economic and cultural groups of individuals.
  • Must have a high attention to detail (produce quality and record-keeping).
  • Must be willing to work in all types of New England weather, as most of our work takes place outside and exposed to the elements.
  • Must be able to repeatedly lift 70+ pounds in various conditions.
  • Must be a proven responsible driver with a valid US drivers license and capable of passing DOT physical.
  • Experience driving box trucks in urban and rural environments is strongly preferred.
  • Food handling experience is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of fruit and vegetable varieties grown in Massachusetts is strongly preferred.
  • Customer service or similar experience is preferred.
  • Experience operating manual and electric pallet jacks and forklifts is a plus but not required (training is provided).

ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION
The following additional compensation is provided for both positions:

  • Year-end bonus (based on total hours worked) contingent on completion of seasonal job term
  • Three paid holidays at 1.5 times hourly rate if worked; Labor Day (9/4/2017), Columbus Day (10/9/2017), and Veteran’s Day (11/11/2017)
  • Two paid days off for Thanksgiving (11/23/2017 and 11/24/2017)
  • Monthly cell-phone reimbursement
