Company description About Us: Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition.

Our Farms & Facilities:
Harlem Grown operates three soil-based urban farms, four school gardens, and one hydroponic greenhouse, and is currently building a new soil-based farm, greenhouse, and learning annex. Our offices and properties are located between 122 and 151 Streets in Central and East Harlem, Manhattan.

Our Programs:
Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our programs include intensive school partnerships placing sustainability mentors in six public schools, as well as educational farm tours, a year-round food & farming curriculum, summer camp, a Saturday leadership program, and a workforce development program for at-risk young adults. In addition, we engage with our community through wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents. Type:
Part-time or Full-Time, 25 - 40 hours per week

Schedule:
Five days per week, which may include weekends, between 8AM to 6PM. 

Job Overview: Harlem Grown seeks punctual, hardworking Farm Crew to support our urban agricultural facilities. The Farm Crew will report to the Farm Manager & Educator, and work closely as a team with the Lead Mentor, Farm Crew Leaders, and Program Director to accomplish tasks and projects. Under the direction of the Farm Manager & Educator, the Farm Crew assists with daily farm maintenance tasks (weeding, harvesting, cleaning, composting, chicken care), farm improvements (construction), and educational tours and programs for youth. We are growing quickly, with opportunities to advance to become a Farm Crew Leader or School Sustainability Mentor.

Responsibilities:

  • Support Farm Manager and crew with agricultural needs including cultivating and amending soil, pruning, weeding, seeding and transplanting, harvesting, processing, and distributing
  • Maintain community and commercial composting and vermiculture systems, including processing food scraps, monitoring processing, aerating/turning/transferring hot compost
  • Ensure that all agriculture facilities and surrounding sidewalks are clean, tidy, beautified, as well as cleared of snow and ice during winter months
  • Support chicken care needs, including supplying feed, food scraps, water, and cleaning out the chicken coop and run
  • Participate in seasonal construction projects including compost bins, raised beds, storage units, shade shelters
  • Assist with preparation and facilitation of educational farm tours
  • Ensure tools are safely secured throughout the day and returned to their storage location at the end of each shift
  • Be a Harlem Grown ambassador--welcoming community visitors, volunteer groups, and potential funders to our green spaces


Expectations & Qualifications:

  • Be punctual, reliable and motivated to work -- report to shifts on time
  • Clear verbal and written communication of scheduling and support needs to supervisor
  • Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude, especially around children and community members
  • Adhere to Harlem Grown dress code:
    • Weather appropriate clothing (layers and warm socks, gloves, hat, rain gear)
    • Work gloves (provided by HG) 
    • Work boots and pants (willingness to get dirty and worn)
    • Hats/visors for sun & sweat protection only
    • No doo-rags
  • Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and responsibility
  • Flexibility to work different days or extended shifts
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Spanish language fluency, a plus
