FOOD SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

The purpose of this project being conducted by the Center for an Agricultural Economy (CAE) is to prepare a comprehensive local food system strategic plan to support agriculturally-based economic development strategies in the three counties comprising the Northeast Kingdom (NEK) region of Vermont.  Specifically, the CAE, under contract to the Northeast Vermont Development Association (NVDA), seeks to conduct a study and draft a plan to position the agricultural sector in the Northeast Kingdom to participate in and take full advantage of the opportunities to diversify and expand this component of the area’s economy.

The NEK Food System Development Project Manager position provides for overall planning and co-ordination of resources, tasks, and necessary steps for completing a NEK regional strategic plan for food systems development. This is a full-time position for up to 12 months (no benefits) located in Hardwick with travel throughout the NEK. The annualized salary is set at $39,520.

The project manager will conduct outreach to agriculture-related businesses in the NEK and neighboring region for the purpose of engaging employers in the planning process as outlined in a work plan and complete supporting analyses as part of the preparation of the final strategic plan document.

The successful candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills.  Project management and plan development skills especially as associated with an entrepreneurial background, innovative thinking, facilitation and consensus building skills are preferable. A track record demonstrating strong group leadership and organizational skills with the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team is a required attribute. Knowledge of the Northeast Kingdom economic climate and regional dynamics is a plus.

A Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with a major study in business administration or economic development, or similar field is required. Five years of professional experience in organizations involved with program planning and evaluation, business management or related agricultural entity management, along with supervisory experience in any occupational area, preferably as related to agricultural production pursuits, is desirable.

The position will be filled as soon as a well qualified individual is identified. Position concludes June 30, 2011.

SCHOOL FOOD NUTRITION EDUCATOR
Urban & Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College

The Urban & Environmental Policy Institute (UEPI) is a community oriented research and advocacy organization based at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA. UEPI serves as the umbrella for a variety of affiliated programs addressing work and industry, food and nutrition, housing, transportation, regional and community development, land use, and urban environmental issues. UEPI functions both as an academic center with strong community ties and a community-based organization with a strong research and policy UEPI includes a number of innovative projects including the Healthy School Food Coalition (HSFC), established in 2001 as a group of committed parents, students and teachers seeking to develop nutrition policies and mobilize the school community to improve access to healthy foods through the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs in cafeterias throughout LAUSD school campuses. Since its inception the Healthy School Food Coalition has been played a critical leadership role in advocating for policy adoption and full implementation of the Healthy Beverage Resolution (2002), Obesity Prevention Motion (2003) and the Cafeteria Improvement Motion (2005).

UEPI is seeking a candidate for the position of HSFC School Food Nutrition Educator to implement the activities as outlined by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s Project RENEW (Renewing Environments for Nutrition, Exercise and Wellness) Community Action Plan. Project RENEW is made possible by funding from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative, and includes a mix of policy change and innovative programming strategies aimed at reducing childhood obesity. The individual will work with the Lead Organizer, our collaborators, and Project RENEW staff to outreach and educate about, and promote the implementation of the Institute of Medicine’s nutrition recommendations within LAUSD and other selected school districts. Project RENEW, and consequently this position, is funded for 2 years.

Under the supervision of the Lead Organizer and in collaboration with project partners:
• Accomplish the implementation of school nutrition standards as recommended by
the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and as outlined in the RENEW work plan.
• Outreach and educate parents and communities about the IOM recommendations
so that they may develop similar practices at home.
• Work with school district food services staff and train them to better understand
and implement IOM recommendations.
• Outreach to and expand the membership base of the Healthy School Food Coalition
by reaching out to youth and parents within LAUSD and selected school districts to
increase awareness of the district’s food and nutrition policies and wellness policies.
Build relationships with school officials (such as school board, district and site
administrators, and school food services staff), with Project RENEW staff, and other
Conduct ongoing one-on-one community recruitment visits and other outreach
activities at schools, during after school programs and at pertinent community
Produce culturally and linguistically appropriate materials for outreach and
education such as fliers and fact sheets
Contribute to overall UEPI mission and activities
• Community organizing experience in low-income and in multicultural communities
• Experience working with youth, parents and in schools, especially within food
• Bilingual with excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish
• Detail-oriented , well organized, and possess good record keeping ability
• Self motivated, hard working, reliable and punctual
• Must have own transportation, and be willing /able to work some evenings and

The successful candidate will primarily coordinate and implement an organic agriculture education program to train a network of African farmers and ag professionals in appropriate regenerative organic farming technologies.  These programs, funded by H.G. Buffett Foundation and Africare, will focus on increasing farmers’ adoption of cover crops and cover crop-based rotational no-till practices to increase the sustainability of farmers’ cropping systems in Mali and South Africa over a 5 year period. All supported practices will be certifiably organic, although targeted farmer participants are primarily small-holder producers. In addition to implementing all training activities, this position will also direct and manage a field trial coordinator in South Africa. The position is based in South Africa.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Conduct interviews with farmers regarding target practices and system performance
•    Coordinate and conduct on-farm sampling of organic agriculture test plots in Mali and South Africa
•    Coordinate with and train extension personnel to plan, organize, and facilitate an on-farm, farmer-oriented events that include farmer-to-farmer learning activities and training in regionally appropriate organic ag practices
•    Oversee field trials and associated staff in South Africa
•    Analyze and summarize findings from on-farm work
