NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY

As someone who has worked with food in various capacities all my life, I love the way you are bringing food and people together in your work!
                             - Brenda, GFJ Fan

I have known for about a year and a half that I want a "good food job" -- of what variety, I'm not sure yet -- and I was frustrated with trying to find them through standard job sites. I stumbled upon your site a few months ago and now I check it every day.
                             - Blake, Job Seeker

Thank you both for creating this wonderful website where I can find jobs that I know will make our communities and environment better.

We're so glad to be of service.

We know that the holidays - as well as the accompanying cold weather and fleeting daylight - lend themselves to distractions and hibernation, but we happen to think that the bustling holiday season is a prime opportunity for food lovers (and aspiring gastronomes).

The next few weeks will be the busiest time for food related businesses. They'll be working around the clock to fill orders, prepare customers for holiday feasts, and make a large percentage of their annual sales.

Although your own inclination might be to relax by the fire with a hot chocolate, or take some much needed rest from a busy semester, this is the perfect time to gain valuable experience, get some street cred, and rack up karma points (not to mention possible payment, barter, and/or discounts).

Contact that business with which you've been dying to work, and see if they need some extra help. It can be a specialty food shop that is mailing out hundreds of gift boxes (see below for the opportunity with BKLYN Larder), a soup kitchen that needs help when everyone else is otherwise engaged, or a producer that needs help with additional holiday markets.

We've gained some of our most valuable experiences this way - working with eco-conscious CocoaVino chocolates Christmas 2006 (the lovely founders became great business mentors - you can check out Alisha's new food consulting business here); working a one day shift on the registers at Dickson's Farmstand Meats for the Thanksgiving 2010 Turkey Pick-up; packing the holiday boxes at BKLYN Larder last year when they got slammed as a result of some positive press! Though all of those were volunteer experiences, they have come back to ten-fold in terms of experience, delicious food, and valuable connections.

So go ahead . . . ask to help. And if they say no . . . show up. We assure you, they just might need an extra set of hands in a pinch. A few hours of your time can make a world of difference in helping their efforts for the holidays and your job seeking efforts beyond.

If you have a story about when you helped a food related business get through the holidays, let us know! We're happy to share ideas in the coming weeks.

Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
