NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY

You & Dorothy are doing fantastic work and I really value your organization/website!
                               -  Marlo, Job Seeker

Thank you so much for organizing this fair. It is a wonderful experience to see the different faces of the 'food industry' in one place - especially with more advocacy groups.
                              - Kimberly, Job Seeker

I love your emails. They get me so excited about the world of opportunities I'll have after grad school.
                                - Julie, Job Seeker

We like you, too.

WHAT NOW . . . ?

Wow! We're speechless. We can hardly keep track of what went down in the 90 packed minutes otherwise dubbed as The Good Food Jobs Fair last Friday. A small cafeteria was brimming with so much good food energy that it was nearly set ablaze. There were hundreds of simultaneous conversations, card exchanges, flyer distributions, and wheels turning in everyone's heads. This is what happens when we all get together in one place.

But it pales in comparison to what will happen over the coming weeks as a result. Here are a few reminders how about how to (still) make the most of the Fair:
  • Let It Marinate. Who did you meet? Who did you miss? What projects inspired you? Make a plan of attack for how you want to follow up on the goings on and why. And then go for it!

  • Follow Up! That's right . . . your time at the Fair is for nothing if you don't follow up. Write people you met. Ask more questions. Make plans to meet up in a less frenzied setting. This is really where the magic happens.

  • Make Things Happen. We were happy to co-host the Fair, but now it's up to you to pay it forward. If you have questions, we are here - and always happy to brainstorm with you. But you have to take the first steps. Don't lose momentum. Now is the time to do it.

  • Share Your Story. We want to hear it all. Did you land your dream job from the Fair? Did you learn about something revolutionary? Did you meet your new best food friend? Are you starting a project as a result of a discussion you had there? Let us know! We want to hear it all.
For those of you who left your cards at the Good Food Jobs booth, stay tuned, as we are going to be doing our part and following up over the course of the next two weeks (forgive us, as there were hundreds). In the meantime, don't hesitate to beat us to it and write to us first! We love to see go-getters in action.

THE GASTRO.GNOMES BLOG
Jessica Kesselman / Program Director & CSA Coordinator / Rockland Farm Alliance

These days, we are living on the extremes, with each of us in an urban or a rural community (Dorothy in Brooklyn, Taylor in the North East Kingdom of Vermont), and we don't often spend time thinking about the suburban wilderness in between. If you've ever thought to yourself, 'I could never live in a suburb.' then Jessica's story might be the one to make to you think twice. Her thoughts on food and community are as engaging as any tale of 24-hour bodegas on every corner, or miles of clear, bright stars in the country sky. Read more...

Do you live in the city, the country or in between? What's your biggest challenge in finding local ingredients and cooking at home? Leave your comments on this blog post.
