ISSUE NO. 510

WE STAND...

with those who are speaking out and recognizing the truth of George Floyd's murder by a Minneapolis police officer, only the latest in an ongoing system of crime that takes place every day against Black people in the United States.

Our privilege as White people born in the United States is not separate from our ability to breathe in and out each day. Breathing is a political act* for those with the privilege to take it for granted. Breathing is a political act for those who are standing up to speak out, those who are still struggling to find their voices, and those who cannot yet be heard because violence, oppression, or ignorance drown them out.

In solidarity,

*Through online research, I was unable to find a source for the statement, 'Breathing is a political act,' though it was referenced in an interview with Nigerian-American writer, Teju Cole, and in a watercolor by UK artist, Bunny Mazhari. If anyone reading this can attribute the quote, we would love to know and share.
