Good Food Jobs is a gastro-job search tool, designed to link people looking for meaningful food work with the businesses that need their energy, enthusiasm, and intellect. We post opportunities with farmers and food artisans, policy makers and purveyors, retailers and restaurateurs, economists, ecologists, and more. Good Food Jobs will launch this summer.

the gastrognomes is a blog for food lovers who want to put their passions to work. We profile the most interesting, engaging, and unlikely food professionals that we find, and we publish them here to inspire you.

BUON GIORNO
What a week! Below are some highlights from our first Northeast University tour and our event at New Amsterdam Market. Thanks to all of the kind folks we met along the way. You are shaping what we do at Good Food Jobs and we appreciate your insight, input, and endless inspiration.
Upcoming this week, Taylor will be going to Terra Madre and Salone del Gusto, Slow Food's mecca events in Turin, Italy. Will you be there too? If so, drop us a line at taylor@goodfoodjobs.com. Perhaps we can meet face-to-face (we love the internet, but there's just nothing like meeting in person).
Our recent adventures inspired us to start a new EDUCATION section on the website, where budding gastronomes can seek out good food learning opportunities - be it in a university setting, for professional purposes, or as extracurricular activities. Check it out at http://goodfoodjobs.com/education.html. We'll be updating it frequently, so be sure to bookmark it.
A presto,

EVENT RECAP
"5 CENT CAREER COACH"
GOOD FOOD JOBS at NEW AMSTERDAM MARKET
Sunday 17 October 2010
Thanks to everyone who came out to New Amsterdam Market yesterday to ask their burning food career questions! We met career changers, farmers, and aspiring artisans. And they had some really great questions. Here are a few:
Is there any need for people with business backgrounds?
As a matter of fact, there is a huge need! Many small business can't pay the big bucks that large corporations can, but if you think strategically, you can provide consulting services to a group of small businesses that could use your expertise. It may be more work, but when you are doing something you believe in, it makes it all worth it (not to mention that food businesses like to barter! At least you know you won't go hungry ;)
I just graduated from law school, so your site doesn't pertain to me.
Well that's not a question, but we're not letting you get off that easily. In our personal experience, we had a lot of questions building our business - ours were mostly routed around internet liability and other fun web business inquiries, but there's a huge market for hospitality law, patents, trademark, or just answering business related questions. Everyone can use a lawyer at some point - isn't that why you got into it?
Just to prove it, for our next "5 Cent" stint at New Amsterdam, we're hoping to wrangle a lawyer friend into coming with us to answer inquiries about the legalities of starting your own food business. We'll keep you posted.
GOOD FOOD JOBS ON THE ROAD
We travel far and wide to get the word out
NORTHEAST UNVIERSITY TOUR
Nothing says fall like being on a New England College Campus. This past week we hit up 3 food, gastronomy, and ecology focused programs to meet the students, staff, and revolutionaries who are promoting good food.
Stop #1 University of New Hampshire
We had the pleasure of speaking to students studying hospitality management, nutritional sciences, and eco-gastronomy. The only question we have is, "Where was the Eco-Gastronomy program when we were applying to universities?"
Stop #2 Boston University
Thank you to the Director and Assistant Director of the Life-Long Learning program for educating us about all that BU has to offer. Of note, you can couple your Master of Liberal Arts in Gastronomy with a 14-wk Culinary Arts Certificate, getting a valuable background in kitchen skills and practices to complement your food degree.
Stop #3 Yale University
Yale was the only stop that didn't have a dedicated food-related field of study, but that does not mean that their interest in the subject was any less. We spoke with graduate students in Environmental Management who were all looking to apply their area of expertise to food - production, distribution, and promotion. We also got to check out the student farm and learn about the Yale Sustainable Food Project.
Upcoming University Tour
In early November we'll be heading up to the great state of Vermont to see the students at Green Mountain College, University of Vermont, and Middlebury. Stay tuned for more stories.
Want us to come to your school?
Thanks for asking! We'd love to. Send us an email and we'll try to arrange a visit.
We've started a list of "Education" resources on our website. Check it out at http://goodfoodjobs.com/education.html

Gillian Ferguson
Segment Producer, Public Radio
KCRW Good Food
Most folks straight out of college would kill for an art gallery gig. Gillian was one of them. But few people can hide their innate interest when it comes to food. Gillian knew the jig was up when she and her co-workers started hosting parties at the gallery just so they could cater them. “Epicurated” turned into a full-time pursuit: she left her day job to find her way in the food world. Here’s the new profession she’s curated for herself . . . read more here.
