We're so glad to be of service.

First, let's give credit where credit is due. We must thank Chris Guillebeau - of the blog and book The Art of Non-Conformity - for inspiring this newsletter with his latest post: (Never) Save It For Later.

We admire Chris' writing and his ethos, as it often gives us food for thought when answering inquiries about how to forge a career in the (sustainable) food world. Let's face it, we are non-conformists, and once we embrace that fact we can more easily navigate the landscape. In other words, once we realize their is no set path to finding a dream job in food, we can be more creative in our approach and have more realistic expectations about the rocky terrain ahead and how to handle it.

But Chris' blog post really hit home today for two reasons:
  1. We always see people waiting. In regard to job searching, it's waiting for the perfect opportunity to come along, waiting to apply, or just waiting to commit. When we wait, we miss the potential opportunities that are down the line; those that come from meeting new people, learning new things, and taking charge of what we want. You've all got energy and interest in the field (literally and figuratively); please don't save it for later.

  2. Yesterday Taylor witnessed a tragic accident. For the past month, she's been dog-sitting Ruby, a vibrant Chocolate Lab. While Ruby was playing in the yard, her ears perked up at the FedEx truck cruising down the dirt road and she leaped out to join the fun. Blinded by her excitement, she was hit and died shortly thereafter.

Today we mourn the loss of a good friend - a personailty that touched us - and a relationship that we will surely miss. We also hope it may inspire you into action. Life is too short to be doing something that you don't love wholeheartedly. Every day should be one where you believe in what you do. For Ruby, that was parading big sticks around the yard, and making people smile. For you, we hope it's changing the way that the world eats for the better, one meal at a time.
With love,
Taylor & Dorothy

THE GASTRO.GNOMES BLOG

Vanessa Gürtler
Dottoressa di Scienze Gastronomiche
Wodka Wanessa

For every person focused on the plate, there seems to be someone equally passionate about the cup, which strikes a truly beautiful balance in our opinion. The history and science involved in brewing beer and distilling spirits is compelling for a million reasons, not least because of the obvious enjoyment that flows with the warmth and tingle of an alcoholic beverage. If you're fluent in German, or capable of drinking Vodka from the bottle with a straw, you'll have no trouble getting to know Vanessa, who channeled a passion for food culture into the production of vodka with her company Wodka Wanessa.
