ISSUE NO. 493

I LOVE COOKING BECAUSE . . .

Last week we asked, What do you love most about cooking?, and many folks had an answer. Here's a selection:
  • it's my 'love language' (i.e. the way I feed others, in every sense of the word)
  • it allows me to be fully present and relaxed
  • it's a tactile / sensual experience
  • it allows me to be creative and explore
  • for the peace and calm it brings
  • I am thrilled with new experiences and opportunities to learn
  • I like to approach it like a puzzle - What's fresh? What's on hand? How do you work with what you have in the cupboards to make something delicious and nutritious?
  • I love witnessing transformation
  • cooking gives me the chance to actually make something (as opposed to my 'work' which requires sitting at the computer all day)
  • it allows me to decompress from my day
  • it creates a sense of focus and accomplishment
  • improvising! This is where my self-expression shines
  • I feel like a spider weaving my loved ones into my life
  • it encompasses all of the senses
  • conversation is the best over homemade food
  • the world around me disappears in a way that re-appears - i.e. the reality of the world itself gets muted and then I fall in love with the world again via the food it provides
But the most overwhelming sentiment was that people loved cooking because of the way it tethered them to something bigger than themselves - connecting with nature, their senses, or - perhaps most importantly - to those who shared in the experience. In the words of another reader, 'It's a way for me to show people I love them because sometimes I'm bad at words.'

We've always subscribed to the idea that nobody needs to fight over pieces of pie - the better alternative is to bake and share more pie together. Thank you for being a part of this community. We hope that you come for the jobs, but stay for the camaraderie.

PS if you could be friends with any food professional (dead or alive) who would you choose and why?

In friendship,

Tay + Dor

tidbits...

what we’re reading / listening to / watching / noticing / thinking about / captivated by this Tuesday…

How one father imparted daily (folded) wisdom to his kids - an alternative form of nourishment that they found in their lunch box each day.

Something to wake you up in these depths of winter: a trip to Honduras to explore the intersection of coffee, climate change, and culture.

If you don't pick a day to relax your body will pick it for you. - from Peace, Love and Smiles, by way of Be More With Less
