Job description

Market Manager for the Birdhouse Farmers Market is a contract position to successfully manage all aspects of the market as set forth in this job description, and to be the Market’s public representative and advocate.

  • The position is part time/year round, paid bi‐weekly.
  • Hourly wage is based on experience.
  • Required to attend and manage weekly Tuesday market days, set up through break down.
  • Reports directly to the Birdhouse Farmers Market Board of Directors.
 

Qualifications

Strong computer, time management, organization and communication skills are essential. Prior experience involving community relations, event planning, fundraising, marketing, and bookkeeping is desirable.

Knowledge of farming, farmers markets and the central Virginia agriculture community is a plus.

 

Weekly Market Duties and Responsibilities

The Manager of Birdhouse Farmers Market (BFM) is responsible for weekly market operations (May-November) including:

  • market setup and breakdown, including arranging welcome tent, market signage, tables and chairs, etc.
  • aiding market vendors, as needed
  • orienting and utilizing volunteers on market day
  • data collection and reporting, including weekly customer counts.
  • managing market supplies
  • maintenance of market equipment
  • set up and oversight of market amenities and programs, such as children’s activities and music.
  • setting up EBT/SNAP/ATM equipment and making it available for the duration of the market.
  • assisting the Treasurer with collecting and verification of monies collected and tokens redeemed at the end of each market.
  • dropping Market financials at EnRichmond Foundation at the end of the market day.
 

General Market Oversight

The Market Manager will:

  • learn and ensure compliance with market rules, state and city regulations regarding public safety, food handling, and licensing.
  • work with vendors and customers to resolve any disputes
  • monitor and evaluate progress on Market goals.
  • ensure that market, vendor, and volunteer files and historical documents are maintained.
  • oversee the Market application and approval process of vendors
  • recruit, train, schedule, and supervise market volunteers
  • organize the annual vendor meeting,
  • visit vendors business establishments, as needed,
  • and work with vendors and customers to implement ideas to increase the Market’s success.
 

Other responsibilities:

 

Programming/Community (mainly off-season work)

  • plan and organize market events, including children’s activities and market music
  • work with community partners to create projects of mutual interest and benefit, including local food, food access, and farmers market organizations.
  • actively engage with neighborhood organizations, churches, etc to increase market’s visibility and stature.
 

Marketing/Fundraising

  • Assist in implementation of marketing plan established by the Board of Directors, including newsletter, website and social media promotions.
  • Assist in implementation of fundraising effort established by the Board of Directors, including researching and writing grants, securing sponsors, and soliciting donations.
  • Oversee the implementation of grants.
 

Board of Directors

  • Attend board meetings and/or submit a written report prior to the meeting apprising the Board of market progress, challenges, projects, and recommendations for improvements.  
  • Monitor and evaluate progress on Market goals.
  • Notify Board of Directors of any immediate issues and concerns.
