Job description

Responsibilities


You’ll be part of a small team in a startup environment. The core of this position is to receive compostable materials, and integrate them into our on farm composting process. As a Compost Creator you will interact directly with the Route Wranglers and Soil Slingers, coordinating the receipt of compostables, managing the mixing of materials (you will become a compost mixologist), constructing the compost windrows (long piles), sifting compost, and managing cleanliness of containers used to collect the food scrap inputs.



At a basic level, on farm compost creator:


  • Managing the receipt of compostables
  • Tipping food scrap collection containers (very heavy) onto compost pad for mixing
  • Removing contamination from compostables after containers are tipped
  • Mixing compostables and building active compost piles (using tractor, and other equipment)
  • Managing cleanliness of collection containers, thoroughly washing each container with soap, pressure washer, etc.
  • Sifting finished compost and preparing it for delivery

Your day may also include:

  • Collecting data on the composting process such as: amount of compostables received, schedules of turning piles, temperatures, etc.
  • Occasionally interacting with customers and the public, including possible field trips from schools and other tour type interactions
  • Interacting closely with the farm manager at King of Crops and other farm employees throughout your day

About You


  • Clean driving record and comfortable maneuvering large vehicles including tractors, bobcats, pick-up trucks, and trailers
  • Strong commitment to safety of self and others
  • Love of exceptional customer service, and a natural sense of hustle
  • Strong desire to work with your head AND your hands
  • Not afraid or put off by the ick factor of being up-close-and-personal with rotting and smelling materials
  • Able to lift 50 pounds above your head
  • Willing and able to work outdoors in all elements (rain, heat, cold, etc.)
  • Detail oriented, with a demonstrated ability to work independently, multitask, problem solve, and react quickly to changing conditions
  • Committed to communicating regularly and constructively with team members
  • Experience driving commercial vehicles and operating heavy equipment a plus
