About Van Leeuwen:
Van Leeuwen is known for exceptional ingredient-focused dairy and vegan ice creams. For the dairy they start with a base of local milk and cream, organic egg yolks and pure cane sugar. At 17% butterfat and over 6-8% organic egg yolks, they are the richest and most luscious ice creams around. Uniquely, Van Leeuwen ice cream gets its body and luxurious mouthfeel by using copious amounts of cream and eggs--the expensive part of the ice cream formula. This is not the norm in the “artisanal” ice cream world, with most producers using stabilizers like guar, carrageenan and xanthan gum to thicken and stabilize, rather than the real stuff.
For the vegan flavors, Van Leeuwen blends house-made raw cashew milk and coconut cream with organic cocoa butter, raw coconut oil and organic cane sugar. The result is as good as the real thing.
For the classic flavors, they meticulously source the best possible ingredients from exceptional producers. Pistachios come from the slopes of Bronte, Sicily where the volcanic soil they grow in creates an unparalleled flavor. Chocolate comes from Michel Cluizel and Askinosie, and Raaka is used for special flavors. Cocoa butter and vanilla beans are sourced directly from sustainable farmers in Ecuador, and their palm sugar comes from artisans in Bali that use centuries old production techniques. Matcha green tea is from expert Japanese tea trader Kettl. Even the flour used to make their add-ins, comes from organic wheat that is milled by King Arthur in Vermont. Van Leeuwen never waivers from their commitment to using the highest quality ingredients, and all add-ins--fruit jams, cookies, cakes, caramels, fudges of many kind and brittles--are made in their pastry kitchen in Brooklyn.
On the permanent menu there are 24 vegan and dairy flavors. For specials Van Leeuwen offers 5 new flavors each month.
Van Leeuwen was founded by Ben Van Leeuwen, Laura O’Neill and Peter Van Leeuwen out of a scoop truck in 2008. The business partners, brothers, and best friends, now have stores and trucks throughout NYC, LA and Amsterdam and also sell online and in grocers throughout the tristate and Southern California region. All of the ice cream is made daily in Greenpoint, Brooklyn by Van Leeuwen’s awesome team of makers.
Job description
Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream is a growing Brooklyn-based ice cream and vegan ice cream company. Van Leeuwen also makes a small line of baked goods and vegan baked goods for their 7 NYC ice cream stores/ cafes using the best locally milled flours, grains, chocolates and produce.
Training for the position will take place for one week during the day with our head pastry chef. Please email your resume and a cover letter outlining why you want to join the Van Leeuwen team.
POSITION BRIEF
>Responsible for daily production of all baked and mixed goods, sauces, jams and etc.
>Maintain sound food handling and cleaning practices.
>Heavy lifting as well as long periods of standing will be required.
>Follow company protocols and safety rules.
>Effectively communicate with other team members and management.
APPLICANTS MUST HAVES:
>Must have previous 1-2 years of baking experience at minimum.
>Flexible hours, for weekday and weekend availability.
> Excellent attention to detail.
>Able to work well autonomously.
>Must have mobile phone.
>Food handler's permit is a plus.
