Farfields Farm is a 150 acre farmstead project inspired by permaculture design and regenerative agricultural practices, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Afton, Virginia. Our farm is home to a native plant nursery, mixed pastures of beef cattle and laying hens, vegetable and medicinal gardens, mushroom logs, ponds, woodlands, and wildlife. The farm is also the home of the Center for Georgical Jubilism, a base for production, publication and education in service of art, faith, and ecology.
Internship description
2019 Farm Intern / Mashgiach Position:<br /><br /> The farm intern position requires a minimum 3 month commitment between the months of June-August. (Earlier arrival and later departure times is possible and will be considered based upon request). Applicants should be ready to immerse themselves in the diverse activities of working on a production-oriented and community-based farm. Interns will work directly with our Farm Managers and have a chance to learn a diverse set of field skills related to regenerative agriculture. For applicants with Jewish religious observance, we are seeking candidates who can also serve as the mashgichim for the farm’s kitchens, supervising kashrut for event cooking and harvest preservation. This is a full-time position. Weekend responsibilities will vary based on event schedules.<br /><br /> Position Responsibilities:<br /><br /> Farm Production: Farm responsibilities will vary depending on season and project-based needs. Regular activities might involve planting/weeding/irrigating in the gardens; composting; moving our chickens and cattle through our pastures; collecting/washing eggs; inoculating/harvesting mushrooms; general landscaping/forestry; etc. Projects may also involve basic carpentry, stonework, etc. Farm Events & Hospitality: Interns will be a part of our farm events and hospitality team, and assist with Shabbat and event coordination. Farm Kitchens: Interns will work with farm staff in the kitchens and participate in pantry preservation, apothecary processing, and event cooking.<br /><br /><br /> Special Projects:<br /><br /> ● Depending on interns’ particular interests and skills, we can coordinate special work projects with a focus on arts/scholarship/events.<br /> ● All interns are requested to participate in audio and/or written assignments, reflecting upon their time on the farm and their personal learning experience.<br /><br /><br /> Compensation:<br /><br /> - $1,750/month<br /> - Access to garden harvest and eggs<br /> - Farm housing (either a private room in one of the farm buildings or a tiny home)
