Job description

Boone Street Market is a 100% producer-only retail market where local farmers and food artisans can sell directly to consumers year-round. The Boone Street Market Manager (BSMM) role is for an experienced food retail manager who has an entrepreneurial mindset and the skills to build a productive, profitable market. The BSMM oversees and manages the daily operations of the store. This includes working with local agricultural producers to market their products, maintaining a pleasant shopping experience for customers, and ensuring that the market is well-stocked and meeting consumer demand. The BSMM also participates in organization-wide activities that promote products from local farms and food producers and that help educate consumers on the economic impact of supporting locally produced food. This can be an exciting opportunity for a dedicated professional who is passionate about local food and farms, enjoys working with a team and interacting with the public in a community-oriented organization.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Retail Sales & Merchandising

  • Analyze sales and accurately forecast ordering, maintain an accurate, optimal inventory minimizing waste and product shortage.
  • Plan long-term with farmers and producers for acquiring products in peak season.
  • Seek out and pursue new local product opportunities and vendors.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of products and their sources.
  • Advise farmers and producers on pricing, quality standards and merchandising of their products; and help educate them about customer demand.
  • Stay current with food trends and food market best practices.
  • Coordinate with BSM Kitchen Manager to create food items highlighting store products.

Customer and Community Relations

  • Create a thoughtfully curated store experience highlighting local growers and producers that engages the community with our mission.
  • Ensure that customer complaints are resolved fairly and quickly and that all customers, producers and suppliers are treated well.
  • Establish productive, mutually beneficial relationships with producers and suppliers.
  • Collaborate with other organizations to help educate farmers and producers on how to market and sell their products.
  • Work with other JLG team members on local food education events at the market and in the community.

Market Operations

  • Develop and maintain an operating budget.
  • Develop and maintain current Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Operate and manage Shopkeep POS system.
  • Lead, train, schedule and coach market staff, including volunteers, modeling a positive attitude and appropriate workplace behavior.
  • Understand all local, state and federal health codes and maintain the highest safety and sanitation standards.
  • Maintain building and retail area cleanliness, safety, security; maintenance and repair of the building and equipment and an adequate supply.
  • Work with accounting staff to facilitate accurate payments to vendors and suppliers.
  • Establish and maintain eco-friendly and sustainable best practices.
 

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of on-the-job experience in food retail management with an understanding of food costing, profit margins and labor costing
  • Advanced education in food retail or food studies program is a plus.
  • Strong interest and commitment to locally-grown food and farm products.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders, including farmers, producers, customers and volunteers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desire to collaborate with a team to advance the work of the organization.
  • Good math and computer skills with a working knowledge of Word and Excel.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and maintain extended periods of standing.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors with fluctuating temperatures.
  • Boone Street Market is open 6 days/week, Mon-Sat with events in the evening and occasionally on Sundays. The ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends and some holidays is required.
  • Occasional offsite travel for product pick up, farm visits, events and meetings is required.
  • Must submit to and pass a criminal background check.
 

Salary and Benefits

  • Exempt, salaried position based on an average of 40 hours per week.
  • Annual Salary is $33,280.
  • Matching IRA contribution up to 3% of salary.
