About Sterling

Founded in 1958 in Craftsbury Common, Vermont, Sterling College advances ecological thinking and action through affordable experiential learning, preparing knowledgeable, skilled and responsible leaders to face the ecological crises caused by unlimited growth and consumption that threatens the future of the planet. Enrollment is limited to 125 students. Sterling is home to the School of the New American Farmstead and the Wendell Berry Farming Program, is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and is one of only nine colleges and universities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a “Work College.”

ABOUT THE WENDELL BERRY FARMING PROGRAM OF STERLING COLLEGE

The WBFP provides a no-tuition, junior and senior year agriculture curriculum in Henry County, Kentucky. The program was born of a partnership forged between The Berry Center, a farmer advocacy organization in New Castle, Kentucky, and Vermont’s Sterling College. Led by Sterling faculty and staff, the students also work side by side with excellent farmers, foresters, and rural advocates, including The Berry Center staff. The full-time slate of classes is scheduled to launch in August 2019 for a cohort of twelve students. Offering pioneering, integrated approaches to sustainable farming practices and the liberal arts, the curriculum links farming, forestry, draft power, and healthy community and land stewardship. It combines the arts and sciences with cooperative economics, hands-on experience, and farm business training. The WBFP expands Sterling College’s role as the leading voice in higher education for ecological thinking and action.
