The Inn, originally built as a Carnegie vacation home, offers its over-night guests a high-end culinary experience featuring produce from the on-site culinary garden, as well as adventures and tours across the wilderness of Cumberland Island. Guests can also enjoy the isolated beach or a relaxing afternoon watching wild horses.
Job description
The Greyfield Inn is seeking a farmer or farming couple to manage the 1-acre culinary garden.
The goal of Greyfield Garden is to provide guests with an engaging and memorable experience through our sustainably grown produce and flowers, and direct guest engagement. Garden produce is used exclusively in the Greyfield kitchen, cut flowers are arranged for dining tables and guest rooms, and guests regularly tour the garden on their own or led by the gardeners.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and maintain a clean, appealing garden space that is open and welcoming to guests
- Coordinate with the kitchen and management to maximize produce and flower production while reducing waste
- Observe organic practices in garden production including a focus on compost production, cover cropping, integrated pest management, crop diversity, and rotations
- Grow, maintain and harvest a wide variety of produce and flowers for the Inn
- Implement production systems including greenhouse management, pest and disease control, irrigation, succession planting, and post harvest handling.
- Educate guests on sustainable growing practices and our farm-to-table mission
- Work within garden budget to source OMRI certified materials and other organic seeds and products needed for the garden
- Record important harvest and production data to make informed decisions
Required:
- At least 2 years of experience managing a sustainable, diversified vegetable operation
- Ability to work in the challenging conditions of coastal Southeast Georgia which includes heat, humidity, and biting insects
- Self-motivated with strong organizational, record-keeping and time-management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Compensation Details:
- Annual salary commensurate with experience
- Housing and meals provided
- Paid vacation after one year
- Medical and dental after 60 days
