Fromer Market Gardens was established in 2017 by the Hunter Foundation, Inc. to be a model for small scale, high altitude “market gardening” which establishes high produce yield with low environmental impact, situated on a small parcel of land. This idyllic 12 acre parcel is adjacent to our local High School in the center of the Village of Tannersville in the High Peaks region of the Catskill Mountains.The property features a large production area, including an 8,600 square foot state-of-the-art, heated cold weather greenhouse, 20,000 square feet of outdoor farmable land, a mushroom yard, on-site harvesting/cleaning facilities, Market Farm Stand, and a two-bedroom apartment located within our historic and restored 100+ year old Barn.

 

The farm has been organically certified and operates a year round weekly Farm Stand selling produce that is grown on site, and locally sourced products to local residents, visitors, and local restaurants. This is a turn-key and fully operating Farm opportunity as of this date.

Job description

The purpose and vision of the Fromer Property is to create and enhance the character of our community in Tannersville and surrounding region by offering fresh, affordable locally grown organic produce and products. Additionally, we wish to provide education and training centering around the vital role healthy food plays in our daily lives in a beautiful and carefully managed setting.

Farm Manager / Head Farmer

    1. Manages plantings, harvesting and rotation of product in greenhouse and seasonal outdoor beds for a year round growing operation.
    2. Management of weekly farmers market, including point-of-sale management, wholesale sales, customer management, meeting budgetary goals and adhering to spending limits.
    3. Manages upkeep and inventory of locally and on-site produced value added products. (Honey, Syrup, Mushrooms, etc).
    4. Main liaison to Hunter Foundation Inc. Executive Director and representatives.
    5. Responsible for continual contact with outside vendors and restaurant contacts.
    6. Ensures all appropriate record-keeping procedures are maintained.
    7. Oversees the hiring and supervision of Farmhands and other support employees associated with farm production, administration, sales and marketing.
    8. Create and maintain inventory in accordance with NYS Health Department and NOFA-NY certification standards.
    9. Annual re-certification of Organic products.
    10. Community and school liaison. Coordinates with local schools, groups/clubs on experience-based curriculum.
    11. Also coordinates farm site tours, creates community programming including demonstrations.

Deliverables

  1. Maintain direct communications with the Hunter Foundation through: monthly board meeting reports, monthly Farm Committee meetings, daily/weekly check-ins as appropriate.
  2. Annual fiscal / revenue goals will be set for produce and overall sustainability and property profitability. Performance metrics will be put into place.
  3. Community Outreach Plan should include but not limited to:
    1. Community Outreach programs to be developed and cultivated.
    2. Nurture and build existing relationships with Hunter Tannersville Central School District and surrounding educational institutions that include design of extra-curricular programs, internships, and working directly with classes.
    3. Working relationship with local/regional restaurants to maintain and increase wholesale sales.
    4. Work with the Hunter Foundation in developing “The Kitchen”, a community-based commercial kitchen located on the Farm that will offer programs, classes, caterers, and chefs a space to operate.
    5. Event coordination and logistics for events held on location at the Farm.
