The Battery Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing The Battery, the 25-acre public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan. The Battery is at the forefront of sustainable urban park planning and organic horticulture and agriculture.
Job description
The youth programs engage close to 7000 elementary, middle, and high school students annually in hands-on experiences in the farm and throughout the park. Farm produce is donated to schools that participate in farm programming and non-profit partners.
The Educator position is part-time and seasonal through October 30. Applicants should have experience in youth education and working on small farms or gardens. They should be comfortable working outdoors with students of various ages and diverse backgrounds. Educators will assist with teaching educational programs throughout The Battery and with general maintenance on the farm.
Schedule: March 25 – October 30
- Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9 am – 4 pm, Friday 9 am – 1 pm (25 hours/week)
- 3 Saturday shifts throughout the season, to be determined
- Shift in work day for major annual events, to be determined
Responsibilities:
- Lead lessons, tours, hands-on activities, and other programming for visiting classes and families
- Organize, maintain, and prepare lesson materials
- Lead students through all aspects of farm maintenance: planting, harvesting, weeding, composting, cooking, and more
- When classes are not in session, assist with farm maintenance tasks alongside team
- Serve as a friendly ambassador for The Battery
- Assist in other tasks, such as staffing events, for The Battery Conservancy
Qualifications:
- Availability as detailed above
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a related field OR
- Related experience in youth education and/or small-scale farming
- Experience leading inquiry-based, hands-on activities for students K-12 in all weather conditions
- Creativity and initiative with strong communication and organizational skills
- A passion for urban farming and garden-based education
- Ability to crouch, bend, squat, use hand tools such as shovels and rakes, and lift up to 40lbs
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Additional language skills a plus
Compensation: $20/hr
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15/hr +
