Windy Acres Farm in Orlinda, TN (45 min. north of Nashville) is a cooperative effort of several families committed to stewarding the land and animals in their care. In 1986, Alfred and Carney Farris established Windy Acres Farm as part of the solution to the ever-growing crises of topsoil degradation and water pollution, integrating organic practices in all that they do, including:
- Crop rotations
- Cover cropping
- Eliminating synthetic pesticides and herbicides
- Non-GMO seeds and open-pollinated seeds
- Enhancing biological soil life
- Reintroducing cattle and sheep in grain crop rotations
- Cultivating healthy, grass-fed and pasture-raised beef, pork, and poultry
Farming the Commons:
Windy Acres is in the process of becoming a part of the Middle Tennessee Agrarian Commons, a bioregional non-profit land trust co-founded by Windy Acres Farm, Agrarian Commons, and Agrarian Trust for the purpose of holding, preserving, and giving farmers equitable access to farmland via 99-year ground leases, Agrarian Commons is committed to a model of community-based land that supports the next generation of farmers through equitable transition and equitable access to farmland.
Job description
Are you an experienced farmer who believes in sustainable, organic, and diversified production? Are you looking for land to grow your business?
Windy Acres Farm is looking for a farm enterprise to complement its busy, Certified Organic grain farm with grass-fed beef, pork, and pastured poultry operations. There is farmer housing opportunity, and ample sheds, barn space, water and irrigation, miles of hi-tensile fencing, and solar power available.
Candidate Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience operating a farm enterprise and collaborating with community and farmers to realize economic, social, and environmental goals
- Demonstrated commitment to ecological farming practices, social justice, and the Agrarian Trust and Middle Tennessee Agrarian Commons goals of de-commodifying land and protecting affordable and equitable farmland access
Ideal candidates will also have:
- Experience in welding, tractor, farm equipment, and/or mechanical experience
- Experience working cattle, raising pigs, and pasturing poultry
- Solid understanding of organic and sustainable farming principles
- Diverse production backgrounds that may include: dairy, orchards, agroforestry, small ruminants, high tunnel production, and/or more
- Familiarity with Middle Tennessee, which may include markets, growing season, communities, etc
