Company description
Heartland Farm, founded in 1987 and located centrally in rural Kansas, is an 80 A. farmstead which is a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. In addition to organic vegetable gardens --non-certified--a small alpaca herd and layer chickens, we also nourish people through selling at local farmers' markets, creative and sustainable classes and workshops, hosting day and overnight visitors and welcoming short and long-term volunteers. Our operation seeks sustainability through careful use of regenerative practices and our various enterprises of hospitality, crafts production, workshops and fund-raising.
We seek to continue to be a resource of hope and sustainability in our rural community.
Job description
We are looking for an experienced Organic Farm Manager to take over our vegetable operation as well as the overall 80 A. farm management. We have several vegetable gardens and a high tunnel, a 20-head herd of alpacas, a 125-hen layer flock and extensive trails and prairie pastures. We host programs in sustainable living, participate in our local (Great Bend) Farmers' Market, offer retreat space for visitors, host tours for large and small groups and have a well-recognized fiber-arts program.
Heartland Farm (www.heartlandfarm-ks.org) has been a ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Peace (www.oppeace.org) since 1987. It has been managed with permaculture design which has been in place for over 30 years. Though not certified, we have continually managed the Farm organically. We operate on a team basis utilizing many of the Savory Institute's Holistic Management principles. At present 3 Dominican Sisters live on site and participate fully in the Farm's many activities. 2 other part-time employees--Marketing and Media and Operations Manager, commute locally. Another sister works part-time. We are located in rural Central Kansas and seek to address the challenges as well as celebrate the strengths of our enterprising and resourceful neighbors.
The Farm Manager may have a housing on site as part of the compensation for this position which includes a home for a family--this can be furnished or unfurnished as desired. Or salary will be adjusted accordingly.
This is an opportunity to grow not only vegetables but your own skills as both a producer of food and as someone who engages our local region with a vision for health, wholeness and community. There are ample opportunities to share your passion and knowledge with interns, volunteers and visitors. Come join our team!
