Job description
The Chief Cooperative Officer is the primary executive officer of Honest Weight Food Cooperative, Inc., (HWFC, Honest Weight or Co-op) responsible for leading the Co-op as we pursue the Co-op’s mission and continue to be a successful cooperative corporation. The Chief Cooperative Officer is the supervisor of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Director of Operations, Marketing Manager, Human Resources Manager, and Maintenance/Repair Manager. The Chief Cooperative Officer will meet weekly with the CFO, Director of Operations, Human Resources Manager, Marketing Manager, and Membership Manager (MM) in pursuing the Chief Cooperative Officer role and responsibilities.
Principal Responsibilities
a. Create and sustain a cooperative environment for MOs, owners, employees, management, and consumers at all times, while ensuring a professional level of service, productivity, and profitability;
b. Directly supervise the CFO, Director of Operations, Human Resources Manager, Marketing Manager, Maintenance/Repair Manager as well as other employees or departments as may be determined. Duties include mentoring and guiding their professional development, ensuring accountability, supporting their professional obligations and encouraging professional growth;
c. Meet weekly with the CFO, Director or Operations, Human Resources Manager, Marketing Manager, Honest Weight Food Cooperative, Inc. Chief Cooperative Officer 2and MM (using remote meetings outside of regular work hours are also encouraged if needed) to seek input and feedback on issues, challenges, ideas and decisions impacting HWFC;
d. Develop and implement the Co-op's plans with regard to policies, procedures, products, and promotions;
e. Support and promote the MO time investment program; partner with the MM to maximize the program’s efficiency and effectiveness;
f. Oversee all store operations to assure compliance with Federal, State and local statutes and regulations, as well compliance with HWFC Bylaws and Employee Manual;
g. Encourage the use of HWFC’s Mission Statement and Statements of Conscience to pursue a positive growth environment for MOs, employees, and department managers in their Co-op experience;
h. Pursue profitability of store operations by working with all direct reports to create and enhance a positive shopping experience for customers and to implement strategies to maximize product availability and use of local providers of organic produce and products;
i. Provide to the Board of Directors regular and, at a minimum, monthly written reports on store operations and finances as well as personnel and organizational reports on efficiencies of store operations and departments; forward reports as prepared by senior management; and attend all Board meetings;
j. Facilitate and promote timely and accurate communication to MOs, owners, management, and all employees of operational updates and policies;
k. Establish professional relationships among staff by promoting team building, empowerment, participatory decision-making, and training;
l. Analyze and adjust staffing to ensure proper functioning and appropriate use of skills. Update and provide job descriptions for Board approval as needed;
m. Propose for Personnel Committee review and Board approval the modification of personnel procedures including evaluation, progressive discipline, and termination process. Assure that correct, legal procedures are followed and are in accordance with HWFC Bylaws and Employee Manual;
n. Work closely with all stakeholders to prepare the annual budget and Benefit Report. Present the budget for approval through the process established by the Board up to and including the Membership vote. Ensure timely financial reports, expend capital budget, and recommend corrective action for operations budget deviations;
o. Ensure that marketing and department goals reflect HWFC’s business goals, Mission Statement, and Statements of Conscience;
p. Have working knowledge of HWFC Bylaws and Food & Product Manual, and of each committee;
q. Consult the MM and/or committees, where relevant, on prospective projects or large purchases prior to finalizing decisions; and
r. Such other duties as may be assigned by the Board.
