Rigor Hill Farm is an organically-run small farm in Ghent, NY. The farm is connected with One White Street (http://onewhitestreetnyc.com) , a new restaurant in TriBeCa, NY, and its soon-to-open next door cafe/market, Rigor Hill Market. The farm also sells to a few local accounts in the Hudson, NY area. The 2-acre market garden, which includes 25,000 sq ft of protected greenhouse/high tunnel space, is the heart of the farm. Operations include annual and perennial vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs; cultivated and foraged mushrooms; foraged foods; honey; and a small orchard.
Job description
The ideal candidate for the Farm Manager position will have at least 3 years of experience farming at a small-scale in the North East, and at least one year of farm management experience. The position will require oversight of all farming operations, but will focus heavily on the market garden. The Farm Manager will work closely with the restaurant’s team and other managers to fulfill the farm’s mission of growing high-quality food year-round.
Key Responsibilities
● Create and implement annual crop plan (with input from the farm’s customers)
● Work with the restaurant and other farm departments to ensure goals and needs are met
● Create and implement schedules for propagation, cultivation, field work
● Follow strict food safety guidelines and ensure the quality, presentation, and flavor of the
produce is never compromised
● Record-keeping for production, harvest, field work, fertility management, etc
● Work to improve the farm’s ability to grow high-quality food (incorporate cover cropping, soil
amending, address limiting factors such as poor drainage, etc)
● Manage winter production in the greenhouses
● Implement IPM strategies
● Manage infrastructure needs and be responsible for any trouble shooting (upgrading irrigation
systems, fixing any broken components, improving greenhouses etc)
● Manage compost pile
● Work alongside and train crew members in all aspects of the farm
● Operate all tools and vehicles (skid steer, walk-behind tractors, tractor, PTO implements, etc)
● Maintain an organized workplace and care for farm tools (sharpening hoe blades, washing
tools, etc)
● Organize and coordinate marketing, sales, and delivery of product
● Hire crew members as needed
● Provide farm tours as needed
● Maintain a safe, clean, and organized workplace
● Create a work schedule to cover the farm’s daily and weekend needs
Qualifications
● 3 years of farming commercially in a small-scale context in the North East, including
greenhouse management
● At least 1 year of farm management experience
● Familiarity with organic methods, greenhouse growing, and intensive vegetable production
● Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and to perform physical tasks throughout the course of the year
● Ability and w to work through tough weather conditions (wind, rain, heat, snow)
● Ability to manage a team and communicate effectively and compassionately
● Valid driver’s license
● Ability to operate tractors and skid steers confidently
● Ability to manage multiple projects and be a face of the farm
● Passion for farming as a career and desire to grow with a new farm and restaurant
Compensation
● Annual salary, commensurate with experience, starting at $60,000
