Job description
Aberdeen Farms is looking for an experienced Farm Manager who has the ability to both tackle farm planning at a high level and execute those plans on their own. This includes successfully growing and maintaining small-scale row crops, garden/specialty crops, and fruit trees. The responsibilities also include starting and managing a CSA program, stocking a farm store, and managing volunteers. The Farm Manager will have a work schedule that expands in growing/harvest season and that tapers back during the offseason. Some evening/special event hours will also be required. He/she should thrive being outside most of the time, working in a labor intensive position, but also be able to plan out the season, manage farm assets, and engage community members & volunteers with a warm demeanor.
Essential Job Functions:
- Farm Planning & Production
- Produce annual field plans
- Maintain Aberdeen standards of production and presentation (highest quality)
- Maintain farm infrastructure and landscaping
- Cultivation activities
- Seed ordering and material acquisition
- Planning and implementation of weekly planting schedule
- Insect and weed control, fertility monitoring and general field observation
- Infrastructure planning, creation and maintenance
- Irrigation planning and implementation
- Soil building program including composting
- Installation, maintenance and monitoring of deer fencing
- Plan weekly harvest schedule, harvest, market and deliver
- Coordination with Aberdeen staff
- Integration of farm with other Aberdeen programs
- Participate in planning for long-term farm development
- Coordinate produce needs with culinary, market and educational programs
- Able to work in the field and office including hard repetitive physical work
- Find of and Supervise farm interns and volunteers (patiently and respectfully)
- Procure and Cooperate with Local Partners to augment what Aberdeen’s Farm has to offer in the Farm Store and CSA
- Take care of livestock
- Revenue Management
- Manage Aberdeen’s Farm Store (stocking, cleaning, running as needed)
- Plan and Facilitate Aberdeen’s CSA (Farm Share) Program
- Manage U-Pick programs on-site
- Identify and sell at local farmers markets
- Coordinated with local chefs and restaurant managers to form agreements on supplying certain ingredients
- Coordinate with both local organizations and residents to provide field trip or tour opportunities
- Neighborhood Events & Marketing
- Coordinate with Residents on Barn Event Rentals
- Plan or Assist with Neighborhood Events to be Hosted by Aberdeen Farms
- Plan or Coordinate Experiential Learning Classes
- Join in Marketing Efforts for Aberdeen Farms & the Aberdeen neighborhood
Supplemental Job Functions:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Minimum two years experience of full-season management
- Proven leadership skills
- Demonstrated good organizational and record keeping skills
- Demonstrated farm planning experience and working knowledge of farm infrastructure
- Knowledge of livestock management and caretaking
- Self-motivated, cooperative and flexible
- Interest in working with youth and youth programs
- Demonstrated good communication skills
- Ability to inspire confidence and create trust.
- Comfortable operating farm equipment & performing maintenance
- Ability to manage time well & prioritize activities while under pressure.
- Warm personality and get along with others easily
- Must be trustworthy
- Ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds

Compensation
