Earth Matter NY Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in and around New York City. Earth Matter NY seeks to reduce the organic waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. Earth Matter NY is a host site for the NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993. This program works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC's soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally.

Job description

THE POSITION

The NYC Compost Project hosted by Earth Matter NY seeks an enthusiastic individual with compost knowledge and organics processing experience for a full-time Organics Recovery Coordinator position. The Coordinator is employed by Earth Matter NY and reports to the NYCCP hosted by Earth Matter’s Project Manager. This person's primary responsibility is supporting Earth Matter NY with organics acceptance and processing as part of the operations team. This person will assist with staffing volunteer and outreach activities as needed. These responsibilities require the candidate to be available for some Sundays during May and October.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in all phases of compost production; acceptance and pre-processing of food and yard feedstocks; construct, monitor and maintain compost piles; screen finished compost.
  • Use small machinery to process organics in Aerated Static Pile Composting systems.
  • Drive dump truck and Skid Steer as needed for production and/or distribution of compost
  • Clean and maintain machinery, tools, and collection bins.
  • Staff our Food Scrap Drop Off (FSDO) as needed and maintain FSDOs on Governors Island.
  • Co-lead volunteer and outreach activities such as workdays, tours, and workshops.
  • Staff Compost Learning Center (CLC) during Sunday Open Hours (1-2x month)
  • Participate in maintenance of the CLC.
  • Participate in chicken animal care shifts as needed.
  • Model best practices in urban composting operations.
  • Act as an overall ambassador of the NYC Compost Project.
  • Attend Earth Matter staff meetings and NYCCP DSNY led meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as determined by Earth Matter NY and by DSNY.

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of and commitment to composting and other recycling efforts.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all seasons and on some weekends.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and perform physically strenuous tasks related to composting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with the public, alone and in a team, in a variety of settings.
  • Good sense of humor, flexibility, and openness to learn.
  • Comfortable with and sensitive to a wide range of people and environments.
  • Skid Steer, sifter, and woodchipper operation and maintenance experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required; experience operating a mid-range truck a plus.
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
    • Minimum one year of related work experience
    • Experience with basic office software
    • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
    • Active NY driver’s license required
