Company description
Pigasus Meats is a small, pasture-based livestock farm in South Hero, VT. We manage a flock of 1700 laying hens and finish approximately 200 pigs using high-welfare management systems. All animals are on pasture in the growing season and on deep-bedded pack in the winter months. We sell our eggs and pork both retail and wholesale to local accounts in Vermont and Massachusetts. Our pork operation is currently transition from a primarily feeder-to-finish system to a farrow-to-finish system. We strive to actively manage our animals across our land in a way that enhances and improves biological diversity and function as well as benefit the ecosystem. 2022 will see further implementation of keyline design principles, enhanced pasture seeding, and continued improvement of adaptive grazing systems for both pigs and chickens. We aim to operate at a scale that provides a substantial amount of food to our local food shed at an appropriate cost. A main tenet of our operation is to provide the best life possible for the animals by allowing them to express their natural pig and chicken behaviors. We are constantly learning, making mistakes, and working to improve our systems to meet the goals above.
