Job description

The Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a great way for teens to learn about urban agriculture and the environment while working in one of the most exciting public gardens in the world. The GAP Co-Coordinator develops and implements the Garden Apprentice Program (GAP)—a four-tiered apprenticeship program for youth entering 8th through 12th grades. Responsibilities include recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of up to 60 apprentices per year, as well as development and facilitation of classroom and garden-based programs including horticulture, science research, environmental action, greenhouse management, and more. The regular work schedule for this position is Tuesday–Saturday in the spring and fall, and Monday–Friday in the summer and winter.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate closely with another GAP coordinator and the manager of Youth Programs to develop program schedules for and implement all aspects of the Garden Apprentice Program.
• Coordinate recruitment and selection of up to 60 youth apprentices per program year, which runs from March through November.
• Coordinate horticulture of the GAP vegetable plots within the Children’s Garden.
• Develop and implement responsive curricula for select GAP placements, which can include Horticulture, Science Research, Exhibition Design, and College Application Support.
• Support holistic youth development for apprentices in areas such as professionalism, community building, leadership, behavior management, and others as needed.
• Lead ongoing communication with apprentices and their families regarding apprentices’ attendance, behavior, and growth.
• Work outdoors in various weather conditions; co-lead yearly overnight camping trips for senior apprentices.
• Coordinate special events for apprentices and their families throughout the year.
• Collaborate with other BBG Education programs in the Children’s Garden and Education Greenhouses; partner with external organizations for community projects and field trips.
• Recruit, train, and supervise four summer instructors assisting with the implementation of the program.
• Plan, lead, and participate in training for apprentices and wider Education staff.
• Source and order all program supplies; track expenses within budget.
• Collect and record data for evaluation and reporting.
• Assist with special Garden-wide projects and initiatives and perform other related duties.

Qualifications:

• BA or BS degree in education, environmental education, related field, or commensurate experience
• Minimum of three years’ related experience, including direct experience working with youth in grades 8 through 12
• Experience in horticulture, preferably with food plants
• Ability and willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to communicate effectively with different audiences, both orally and in writing
• Excellent collaboration, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
• Experience with Microsoft Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs for administrative tasks
• Able to pass a background check for working with children

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary commensurate with experience – $45,489 - $52,312. This is a non-exempt position that is eligible for overtime.
