Job description
Position: Greenhouse Manager
Reports to: Farm Manager
Classification: Exempt
The Greenhouse Manager will be responsible for the oversight of Southall’s greenhouse operations and site-wide propagation. The Greenhouse Manager will be responsible for executing the propagation plan for the farm team’s growing spaces; which include but are not limited to, the production fields, public spaces, and kitchen gardens. The Greenhouse Manager will work closely with the Farm Manager on seasonal timing, plant health and overall best practices.

Daily production of plants from seeds, cuttings, and graftings to achieve production targets.

Daily maintenance of crops in the greenhouse.

Growing vegetables starts for the farm and retail store.

Growing annuals and perennials for landscaped and flower areas.

Maintain records for propagation – working with the farm manager

Monitor germination rates and growth patterns – communicate with farm manager

Once trained, ensure regular maintenance of greenhouse and greenhouse equipment

Monitor and manage pest and disease in greenhouse area

Flexibility to meet various and changing needs of the farm

The citrus Greenhouse is overseen by the Orchardist with heavy collaboration from the Greenhouse Manager. A general understanding of citrus trees including planting, pruning, harvest, irrigation, pests and disease, moisture, and temperature needs are recommended.

Work with Farm Manager on design and execution of Courtyard area.

Propagate annuals and perennials for this space.

Daily maintenance of this area with support of farm and landscape team.
Additional Responsibilities:

Assistance in the garden, when necessary, with weeding, thinning, harvesting, planting, washing, and packing

Knowledge of design and maintenance of flowers, trees, and shrubs with an ability to implement landscape designs

Priorities workload for maximum efficiency and production

Record keeping

Collaborate with ordering of seeds, plants, propagation, and gardening supplies

Knowledge of short-term and long-term seed storage

Knowledge and experience with Integrated Pest Management products and techniques.

Propagation skills required; proper seeding and propagating techniques, watering, and a thorough understanding of the lifecycle of plants from germination to planting.

Thorough knowledge of botany, seed germination, and seed collection/storage

Thorough experience propagating and seeding plants at scale.

Ability to interact positively with advisory group, management, coworkers, and the public to promote a team effort and maintain a positive and professional approach

Ability to produce a high volume of work in a timely manner, which is accurate, complete, and of high quality.

Ability to come to work regularly and on time, follow directions, take criticism, and have a respectful working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret plans.

Ability to draft reports, SOP’s, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, committees, suppliers, and team members.

Working knowledge of various computer software programs, including Microsoft Office suite

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Ability to adapt to changing production as the farm matures

The propagation coordinator will be required to stand, walk, sit, seed by hand, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The team member must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision.

The farm at Southall is a production farm and requires some flexibility with hours.

Bachelor’s degree (B.A) from four-year college or university, or four years related experience.

A background in sustainable farming practices is beneficial

2+ seasons in greenhouse production

Certificate of completion from trade school is beneficial
-
A driver’s license is required.

Compensation
this position is: salaried, $35,568* - $50,000
