Company description
FoodShare South Carolina believes access to fresh, affordable food should not be limited by where a person lives or how much they earn; and that food has the power to change the trajectory of someone’s life. We’re leading the efforts to increase affordable access to fresh food for people who struggle with hunger in South Carolina.
The model is an alternative fresh food network housed at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and began working in Columbia, SC in 2015 as a response to the challenges that low-income families face in accessing fresh, affordable food.
FoodShare South Carolina is unique and different from traditional food distribution models in that it allows participants to retain power, maintain their dignity, and gain access to affordable, quality produce. The program does not require membership fees but creates accessible, direct, and discretionary cash savings to households with no barrier to entry. In 2018, we took the FoodShare model on the road and began offering technical assistance and support for other nonprofits who wished to replicate our programming. Our portfolio of innovative programs includes Fresh Food Box, Veggie Rx, NeighborShare, and Culinary Medicine.
