We are a working Co-op — all member-owners contribute at least 2.5 hours of work every four weeks either through in-store shifts or remote committees.

About Greene Hill Food Co-op
The Greene Hill Food Co-op, a member-owned grocery store in Brooklyn, NY is seeking someone passionate about equitable and sustainable food practices to join our team as a full-time General Manager.
Overview of the Role
The General Manager is the full-time staff member of the co-op and works in coordination with a part-time Weekend Supervisor, the Board and 400 member-owners that provide labor through in-store shifts and committee work. They ensure the store is running smoothly, uphold the general health of the cooperative, and delegate tasks to member-owners to ensure day-to-day tasks are completed successfully. The position requires the ability to lift heavy boxes that can weigh up to 50 pounds repeatedly unassisted and the ability to go up and down a flight of stairs repeatedly.
Who You Are

- Committed/Passionate: You are interested or familiar with food cooperatives or food justice; specific familiarity with Greene Hill Food Co-op and/or other food co-ops is preferred.
- Experienced: You have worked in a grocery store/retail/food/service setting. Experience with Revel or other POS is preferred.
- Organized and Detail-oriented. You know how to manage multiple priorities, create and follow task lists, check expiration dates, product codes and prices, and double-check the work of others.
- Dependable: You have strong customer service skills and will respond to emails, slack messages and in-person questions in a timely manner.
- Problem Solver: From a refrigerator on the fritz to a better product display, we’re looking for someone who has the ability to work through unexpected challenges and someone who will be proactive to implement solutions that improve the store.
- Motivating Communicator: You are able to direct, manage, coordinate, and support a diverse group of member-owners with a wide range of capabilities. You have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing clearly and respectfully in English with diverse populations and stakeholders.
- Flexible: No two days are the same at the co-op. You enjoy variety in your work and the people that you work with.
What You’ll Do
Maintain a clean, welcoming, and inviting and inclusive environment for all shoppers regardless of sexual orientation, race, etc.
- Improve and streamline in-store procedures
- Ensure compliance with health codes & other applicable laws
- Maintain EBT, business license, etc.
- As needed identify, research, propose and implement safety and security procedures, protocols and strategies
- Receive orders, update prices and product merchandising.
Inventory and Ordering
- Liaise and build relationships with suppliers and store vendors
- Identify and respond to product needs and requests
- Work in coordination with the Weekend Supervisor to manage handoffs of tasks and priorities between days working and not working to achieve weekly goals
- Produce/Merchandise Ordering- Place seasonal, weekly orders for produce and other categories alongside Merchandising Committee via online platforms, and email ordering using inventory tracking and product forecasting reports
- Utilize Revel, our POS software to manage invoices, inventory and pricing of goods
Communicate and Coordinate with Co-op community
- Maintain communication with members working weekday in-store shifts
- Manage day-to-day operations of the store including setting priorities and directing member-owners as they complete their 2.5 hour shifts.
- Keep informed on and participate in committee work, as it pertains to the store and to member-labor needs
- Serve as an Ex Officio Board Member; attend all general and board meetings and participate in check-ins, discussions and decisions
- As relevant, participate in the hiring, training and management of additional store staff and/or interns
- Provide service to shoppers by answering questions and locating products
- Liaise with the Operations and Merchandising Committees and other committees as assigned, responding to questions and providing information in a timely manner.
Compensation: $25/hr plus benefits
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
