Farm Crew Mass Audubon Farm at Moose Hill

  • Date Posted January 30, 2023
  • Location Sharon, MA
  • Category Agriculture / Nonprofit
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

The Farm at Moose Hill is a Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary that provides organic produce to more than 250 families through our CSA program in addition to local hunger relief organizations, an on-site farm stand, and farmer’s markets.

The farm is 17 acres, certified organic, and located in Sharon, Massachusetts – about 25 miles from both Boston and Providence. We work with a neighboring farm to plant our crops and cultivate the fields. Moose Hill is the oldest Mass Audubon Sanctuary and is committed to farming with the health of our adjacent woods, meadows, ponds, and vernal pools in mind. The health and happiness of our farmers is very important, too.

Job description We are looking for hard-working individuals with an interest in local food systems and sustainable agriculture to join our team for the 2023 season! Alongside the farm manager, the farm crew will share responsibilities to successfully maintain, harvest, and distribute beautiful produce to our surrounding communities. The work is physically demanding and challenging at times, but you’ll have the opportunity to learn a lot and have a chance to teach others by working alongside volunteers and work-share members. Full-time seasonal positions are available from late April through October (with flexibility on start/end dates) in addition to part-time opportunities!

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plant, weed, irrigate, harvest, wash, pack, and distribute organically grown vegetables.
  • Ensure beautiful, high quality produce.
  • Assist with CSA pick-ups on a rotating schedule with other farmers. This includes, but is not limited to, creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for everyone, providing direction for work share volunteers, maintaining a clean space, and using a point of sale system for farm stand purchases.

Shared, rotating responsibilities, may include:

  • Assist with CSA setup.
  • Provide training and quality guidelines to work share members.
  • Lead the wash area.
  • Set up an on-site farm stand.
  • Maintain electric fences.
  • Keep records and track donations.
  • Deliver produce to our sister sanctuary, Boston Nature Center, if needed.
  • General cleaning of the barn, tools, wash area, etc.

Qualifications

At Mass Audubon, our highest priority is finding the best candidate for the job. Research has shown that people of color and women are less likely to apply for jobs if they don't believe they meet every one of the qualifications described in a job description. We encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of our described qualifications or you have a less traditional background. We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:

  • Experience is not required, but preference will be given to those with food, farming or outdoor work experience.
  • Optimism and positivity, a desire to work efficiently, attention to subtle detail, and a desire to be a part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and an ability to work with a diverse range of people.
  • Applications should be responsible and comfortable with physical labor in all weather conditions (heat, rain, cold, etc.).
  • Enjoy working in a past-faced environment.

Compensation & Benefits

This position’s base salary range is $16.00 - $17.00 per hour plus as many vegetables / fruits as you can eat!

Work Schedule
A typical schedule will be Tuesday-Saturday, 7am to 4:30pm with an hour lunch. Start times and end times may be adjusted to accommodate weather and harvest conditions. Hours may vary throughout the season, but we will not exceed 50 hours during peak season.  Time off is available during the growing season with advanced notice. Flexible schedules can be created ranging from 3 to 5 days per week (15 hrs./wk. minimum).
