Company description

Small Batch Kitchen is a woman-owned, specialty food business with two main components. 

  • A production kitchen where we cook up low-sugar fruit spreads, infuse sea salts, ferment krauts and hot sauces, frozen soups, complete meals, and more. We use local produce and are excited about starting a new direct farm co-packing program to help support more local farms in our area.
  • A specialty food and gift market where we sell our products, in addition to locally sourced milk and eggs, specialty foods, meats, artisan soaps, local art, etc. We also sell specialty cooking equipment, sustainable living products, and native gardening supplies.
 

We encourage all staff to share ideas - on recipes, products to carry in the market, or on efficiency ideas. We are a small team and we believe in working hard while having fun and maintaining a work life balance. We offer flexible scheduling (although some evenings and weekends may be required).

Job description We are looking for an organized and detail oriented person to join our Production team. Reporting directly to the owner of the company, this person would be responsible for ordering, prepping, and storing the produce that we use in our fruit spreads, fermented products, infused sea salts, and other products. 

Last year, we sourced, prepped, and stored nearly 4 tons of produce from local farms.

Responsibilities:
- Work with owner to set produce goals and tentative schedule for the main production season (May-November)
- Submit purchases to local farms, co-ops, and distributors to meet produce needs and to budget
- Receive and inspect all produce when it arrives
- Prep produce according to production requirements.
- Pack and store prepped produce according to production requirements. 
- Maintain records of farms, inventory, etc. for tracking and audit purposes.
- Work efficiently, yet maintaining high level of cleanliness and sanitation
- Identify areas of efficiency or improvement, and discuss with owner about implementation
- Train seasonal prep staff on sanitation, cleanliness, prep requirements and verify that all work is done according to standards
*Please note - while our main produce prep season is May-November, this position is year-round.
Qualifications:
- 2+ Experience working in a commercial kitchen required. 
- ServSafe certification a plus, but not required
- Able to work on feet for long periods
- Able to lift and move up to 50 lbs
- Able to perform repeat tasks and motions (chopping, etc.)
- Able to work under stress - including the ambiguity that comes with working with local farms (ex. adapting when produce is not delivered in the condition expected, or schedule changes related to weather impacting harvests, etc.)
- Able to prioritize work, problem solve, and communicate proficiently in verbal and written forms.
- Able to respectfully correct an issue with a colleague or vendor
- Able to work independently and as part of a team. Knows when to ask for additional help solving a problem.
- Understanding of local growing seasons and approximate harvest times for each type of produce.

Compensation
$19.23/hour. Full time employees are eligible for partially-covered health insurance after 90 days. All employees receive PTO for sick and vacation after 90 days. Staff discounts in our market. Compensation this position is : hourly, $15-20/hr Application instructions
