Company description
The Ecology School seeks to transform how people think about science, food, the environment, and themselves through joyful, hands-on learning for all ages. Located at River Bend Farm in Saco, Maine, The Ecology School provides a variety of ecology programming for children and adults including food systems and farm-based education on our 105- acre campus. We are seeking individuals with a passion for agriculture, education, and the environment to join our farm apprenticeships.
Internship description
We are seeking two local students to join us as student apprentices, and one person to join as a full season farm apprentice at River Bend Farm this season! The apprentices will get their hands dirty, spend lots of time outdoors, and develop useful skills while learning all about growing vegetables on a small-scale farm, and building and caring for permaculture education gardens.
The student apprentices will work with our farm manager and full-season farm apprentice to grow a wide array of vegetables in our one-acre no-till production field, and our main campus permaculture education gardens. The farm apprentices will learn and participate in all aspects of production, from seeding in the greenhouse, planting, tending, and harvesting in the field, to washing and weighing produce, among other tasks. The produce we grow is used for onsite meals and donated to area food pantries.
The farm apprentices will also assist in delivering farm education, and help to support the overall mission and operations of The Ecology School. We are looking for students who have an interest in pursuing agriculture in the future, or are curious to learn more about farming and growing produce! We think farming is a great way to develop a wide range of skills, from adaptability and communication, to creative problem solving and time management, and of course the technical skills involved in growing vegetables.
The student apprenticeships are paid positions that will run for 12 weeks in the summer from June to late August, with the apprentice working 35 hours a week. The pay is $15/hour. The apprenticeship is open to students in high school or college with preference given to local (Saco and Biddeford) students. Lunch is provided on days when programs are running.
