Assistant Vegetable and Garden Manager Liberty Farms

Company description Liberty Farms is a 600+ acre NOFA-NY certified organic farm with a focus on diverse and regenerative agriculture and healthy communities in the Hudson Valley. Our 12-acre vegetable and flower garden is supported by a quickly-growing CSA and several local and NYC farmers’ markets. Elsewhere on the farm, we also raise chickens, pigs, cattle, and sheep, and are home to a world-class equestrian center. Job description

The Assistant Manager’s primary responsibility is to help the Vegetable/Garden Manager and Flower Manager with daily tasks, especially including organizing and leading the harvest crew and post harvest pack & wash for the CSA and markets. The Assistant Manager would also help with some of the tractor work as needed and under the guidance of the Managers. Other responsibilities could include greenhouse seeding and management, mushroom tending and mycology, irrigation management, weed and pest control, assisting with weekend farmers markets and CSA deliveries, and more, all depending on the Assistant Manager’s experience and areas of interest.

The ideal candidate would have a few years of prior experience in commercial organic or biodynamic vegetable growing. Other qualifications include:

  • Strong leadership skills to help organize and supervise a harvest crew of 5-10 people.

  • High quality control standards.

  • Excellent listening, critical thinking, and communication skills.

  • A strong work ethic and the ability to work well with others a sense of humor is always

    helpful!

  • An interest in and an enthusiasm for learning more about organic vegetable growing practices.

  • Some tractor operating experience.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • A willingness to sometimes drive farm delivery vehicles to, from, and within NYC.

  • Because we are in a rural area with no public transportation, a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle are required.

  • Experience growing cut flowers and/or mushrooms a plus.

  • Greenhouse experience a plus.

  • Spanish speaking is a plus.

The position is full-time starting the end of March and going through November, with possible part- time work through the winter. Peak season we work 40-50 hours a week, with reduced hours at the beginning and end of season, and some weekend hours required.
 

In addition to weekly vegetables and eggs from our pasture raised chickens, as well as a monthly meat allotment from our pasture-raised livestock, compensation begins at $20-$25 per hour, DOE.
