About Our Team

Our dynamic and determined staff team is made up of an Executive Director, Executive Assistant, Programs Manager, Marketplace Manager, Marketplace and Delivery Associate, Farm to School Educator, Individual Development Accounts Administrator, and seasonal/temporary staff positions. Our Board of Directors includes 8-10 community members representing various stakeholder groups including food producers, social service organizations, private business owners, corporate and local government employees. Our staff and programming work closely with community partners and organizations.

Job description

Food Roots seeks a detail-oriented, collaborative and self-motivated food systems organizer to manage our growing food hub and online marketplace.

Program Overview

Beginning as a brick and mortar local food retail storefront in 2018, Food Roots Marketplace connects local food consumers with north coast farmers, fishers, ranchers and other north coast food producers. In addition to direct consumers, wholesale and institutional buyers across the region can now buy directly from a wide range of small and medium-sized farm and food producers using a one-stop online shop. Additionally, our physical food hub space is growing in collaboration with regional food systems entities in order to connect our producers to a larger distribution network around the region and state. This position will play a key role in the ongoing development of our food hub and food equity programming alongside our Executive Director and Programs Manager.

Organizational Overview

Food Roots is a mission-driven, nonprofit that provides farm to school youth education, farm and food business support, and equitable food access programming for our north coast Oregon community. Established as a 501c3 non-profit in 2006, Food Roots is located in Tillamook County, a geographically large rural county on the north coast of Oregon with just over 26,000 residents. We have built a wide network of partnerships and relationships throughout our region, working with other nonprofits, community-based organizations and many other strategic partners to provide health and economic benefits to our community through projects and programs rooted in local food.

General Position Overview

The Marketplace Operations Manager is responsible for daily operations of our food hub and online marketplace program. The Manger oversees all marketplace staff and volunteers and ensures that standard operating and administrative procedures are maintained and followed. They are also responsible for developing and managing the marketplace budget and ensuring regular sales and impact data collection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be highly knowledgeable of our online marketplace software in order to manage operations of the marketplace program.

  • Facilitate ongoing recruitment of new producers and wholesale buyers; coordinate new vendor and buyer onboarding including technical assistance with online software.

  • Ensure weekly order fulfillment and delivery logistics.

  • Supervise, train and manage staff and volunteers who support marketplace operations.

  • Maintain up-to-date records of producer agreements, permits/licenses, liability insurance and reporting forms as well as any other information relevant to food safety protocol and operations procedures.

  • Ensure producer product deliveries and proper storage/aggregation of product on site at Food Roots.

  • Maintain wholesale vendor inventories, ensuring consistent supply of products available at the marketplace.

  • Work closely with Food Roots’ Programs Manager on the design, coordination, tracking and evaluation of food equity programming implemented through the marketplace.

  • Lead all communications to vendors, customers and other stakeholders related to marketplace operations and outreach; work with team members and partners to develop and launch marketing and promotion strategies including regular social media engagement.

  • Track marketplace metrics data and provide monthly reporting and summaries to Food Roots Executive Director and Programs Manager.

  • Determine infrastructure needs, research, recommend and help implement at Food Roots to support aggregation and distribution activities as they grow.

  • Ensure that Food Roots’ Marketplace is high-functioning, well organized, meets all food safety regulations and that communications between staff, producers and customers, volunteers, partners, and the community at large are transparent, clear and effective.

  • Be knowledgeable of Food Roots programming and have the ability to communicate our mission, vision and activities to the community at-large.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in program or project management.

  • Experience in local food systems, value chain coordination, supply chain management, farm to institution, business management (a variety of backgrounds could thrive in this position) or other relatable experience.

  • High-energy individual with a strong work ethic.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Competent working with Google Drive and data management software such as Microsoft Excel.

  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated with ability to work with limited supervision.

  • Team player and supportive of program and community development projects.

  • Experience in customer service, sales and marketing.

  • Strong, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working in a community-based setting.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload in a fast-paced, growing non-profit setting.

  • Experience with staff management and volunteer supervision.

  • A personal car and stable home internet is required in this position.

  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record - This position requires some driving of Food Roots delivery vehicle, and therefore, a clean driving record is a requirement and is determined by our insurance provider in order to add you to our insurance coverage. 

  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
