About Greene Hill Food Co-op
The Greene Hill Food Co-op, a member-owned grocery store in Brooklyn, NY is seeking someone passionate about equitable and sustainable food practices to join our team as a part-time Weekend Supervisor.
Overview of the Role
The Weekend Manager will be responsible for managing the operations of the store on Saturdays and Sundays. This position will direct in-store shift working member-owners to ensure day-to-day tasks are completed successfully. This position will also work with the merchandising committee to keep the store well-stocked. The position requires the ability to lift heavy boxes that can weigh up to 50 pounds repeatedly unassisted and the ability to go up and down a flight of stairs repeatedly.
Who You Are

- Committed/Passionate: You are interested or familiar with food cooperatives or food justice; specific familiarity with Greene Hill Food Co-op or other food co-ops is preferred.
- Experienced: You have worked in a grocery store/retail/food/service setting
- Organized and Detail-oriented. You know how to manage multiple priorities, create and follow task lists, check expiration dates, product codes and prices, and double-check the work of others.
- Dependable: You have strong customer service skills and will respond to emails, slack messages and in-person questions in a timely manner.
- Problem Solver: From a refrigerator on the fritz to a better product display, we’re looking for someone who has the ability to work through unexpected challenges and someone who will be proactive to implement solutions that improve the store.
- Motivating Communicator: You are able to direct, manage, coordinate, and support a diverse group of member-owners with a wide range of capabilities. You have the ability to communicate verbally and in writing clearly and respectfully in English with diverse populations and stakeholders.
- Flexible: No two days are the same at the co-op. You enjoy variety in your work and the people that you work with.
What You’ll Do
- Work in coordination with the General Manager to manage handoffs of tasks and priorities between days working and not working to achieve weekly goals.
- Manage day-to-day operations of the store including setting priorities and directing member-owners as they complete their 2.5 hour shifts. This may include filling in for any gaps in member-owner labor including back-up cashiering, overseeing stocking, stocking produce cooler and fruit area, fridges and shelves, cleaning and general upkeep, checking expiration dates and other ad-hoc tasks.
- Update prices, product merchandising, print price labels if missing, add items to POS system collaborate with members on shift on store closing in the evening.
- Liaise with the Operations and Merchandising Committees and other committees as assigned, responding to questions and providing information in a timely manner.
- Provide service to shoppers by answering questions and locating products.
- As needed, cover member-owner labor shifts during last-minute cancellations.
- Collaborate with members on shift on store closing in the evening.
- Maintain a clean, welcoming, inviting and inclusive environment for all shoppers regardless of sexual orientation, race, etc.
- Maintain the walk-in cooler in neat condition and make sure perishable items are regularly restocked in the store fridges upstairs.
- Receive deliveries and stock if necessary (together with members on shift), and make sure the vendor is welcomed and paid if applicable.
Hours & Schedule
14 - 20 hours a week; working full days (10 AM - 6 PM) on Saturdays and Sundays and possibly remote meetings/responsibilities on other days. The schedule may flex depending on the needs of the store.
