About Happy Valley Meat Co.
Happy Valley Meat Co’s mission is to create a local meat system that treats the people and animals involved fairly. Happy Valley tackles this mission by providing restaurants and institutions access to ethically raised meat from family farmers. Small-scale farmers in the northeast are eager to supply consumers in urban areas but they usually lack the time, infrastructure, scale, distribution, and resources to market whole animals or individual cuts. That’s where Happy Valley Meat Co. (HVM) comes in: we purchase whole animals from farmers, work with small-scale processors to portion and pack market-ready cuts of meat, and sell every single part of the animal to people who want it. As a certified B-Corp, we do our best to work better and constantly consider the impact our work has on our partners, employees and community. By working with HVM, chefs and their customers get to enjoy delicious cuts of ethically raised, local meat and contribute to the growth of a better meat supply chain.

About The Position
HVM is seeking a full-time Business Development Manager (BDM) to join its team and grow its restaurant sales and customer base in the New York City metro region. We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about food, sustainability, local farming and restaurants. The ideal candidate is communicative, organized, outgoing, self-starting, and skilled at customer engagement. Candidates should be excited about becoming an expert in the local meat supply chains and impacts, educating customers about the same topics, and contributing to the growth and viability of an alternative food system. The ideal candidate understands and excels at the sales process and has a significant professional network in the NYC restaurant world. You do not need to already be an expert in or have sold meat (that part can be taught!) but you do have to be highly extroverted, sociable, and bold.
Because of HVM’s whole-animal sales model, this position requires developing customer buy-in both on the provenance of the meat as well as on the need to work with a limited supply of any given cut. The HVM team has a mandate to balance its sales in line with the whole-animal supply, within which the BDM will play a critical role in generating sales with the restaurant sector. The BDM position is both in-person and hybrid in nature. The HVM team is geographically distributed and does not have an office, but this role requires active in-person presence with customers and prospects in NYC restaurants. In addition, regular networking events, farm visits, and other promotional events should be expected as important parts of the role. Candidates should ideally be located in NYC or able to commute easily and regularly into the city.
Responsibilities
- Develop qualified lists of potential customers
- Identify high-quality prospects and persuade them to source meat from HVM
- Communicate with prospects persistently via email, phone, and face-to-face meetings as appropriate to make initial and ongoing sales
- Create long-term partnerships with customers by helping them achieve their purchasing goals while supporting HVM’s business model
- Achieve and consistently exceed quarterly and annual sales and support goals
- Maintain strong existing partnerships with our current restaurant customers
- Maintain and leverage HVM’s CRM tool to manage contacts and communications with leads and customers
- Develop and share best sales practices that will serve as a foundation for HVM’s restaurant portfolio
- Advise on marketing efforts, as applicable and relevant to sales
- Liaise regularly with HVM’s leadership, logistics, and sales teams to discuss strategy, needs, products, customers, and more
- Act as an outward-facing ambassador of HVM’s beliefs, brand, and product
Qualifications
- 5-10 years of experience working on the sales or customer-facing side of the food and beverage industry (e.g. restaurant FOH, bartending, food distribution, wine sales, specialty retail)
- Passion for sustainable meat, local farms, food, and top restaurants
- Passion for the restaurant industry and rapport with restaurant professionals—chefs most of all
- Strong familiarity with relevant professional software and CRM tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Netsuite, etc.)
- Outstanding people skills, listening skills, conversational instincts, diplomacy and tact
- Strong follow-up, sense of prioritization and organization, and resiliency
- Ability to hustle, persuade, and convince restaurants of HVM's mission
- Coachability, interest in getting feedback and dedication to consistent improvement
- Enthusiastic about working with a small team that wears many hats in order to grow
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The desire to be a big part of a small team
