Unique opportunity to learn how to make and age cheese in Dundee, Oregon. Are you ready to be a cheesemaker?
Briar Rose Creamery is a tiny, award-winning cheese producer that has been hand-crafting cheese since 2010. This is your chance to become a part of a tight-knit team as an Assistant Cheesemaker.
No dairy animals here, we just make cheese. What kind of cheese? Fresh and aged cow's milk as well as sheep's milk cheese!
Experience is great, but not a deal-breaker. If hired, you will be mentored and gain the skills needed to become a part of Briar Rose Creamery’s award-winning cheesemaking team. You will gain hands-on experience in each step of the cheesemaking process, from vat pasteurizing the milk, to caring for cheese as it ages, to packaging and selling mature cheese. Every person in this small business works hard and strives to maintain our high standards and strong reputation in the cheese industry.
Cheesemaking blends Art & Science
If you love learning new things every day, doing physical tasks, dedicating yourself to getting the job done, this is might be your ideal job. This position is full-time, 32-40+ hours, four days a week, including Saturdays. Multitasking wizards welcome! Did we mention you must enjoy doing lots of dishes?
Qualifications:
- Cheesemaking experience is huge, but will mentor & train the right person.
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions calmly, efficiently, with a positive, take-charge attitude.
- Quick thinking, self-starter, with an eagerness to learn and a keen eye for details.
- Must be able to lift 50+ pounds and be able to perform repetitive tasks.
- Can stand on your feet for hours at a time.
- Able to frequently reach above and below shoulder level, stoop and squat.
- Must have reliable transportation via a car, motorcycle, or bike. Our location is semi-rural, without access to public transportation.
- Kitchen/bakery/winery/brewing/food manufacturing, and/or food preparation experience is a plus.
- Fermentation nerds, welcome!
- A desire to learn all about the magic of cheesemaking!
Job Tasks:
- Pasteurize milk and make a variety of fresh and aged cheeses and age them to maturity. (We'll train you.)
- Wash, rinse, sanitize, repeat.
- Cheesemaking is 75% cleaning. Clean floors, dishes, walls, and equipment every day.
- Affinage! A.K.A. cheese babysitting. (Monitor and attend to cheeses during the aging period.)
- Interact with wholesale and retail customers.
- Masks, gloves are provided to ensure everyone's safety.
The cheese is made at Briar Rose Creamery's cheesemaking facility outside of Dundee, Oregon, 27 miles and one hour southwest of Portland, Oregon.
Hourly compensation depends on experience.
