Job description

The "Veggie Butcher" is in its second year serving Produce Plus farmers markets in the District. According to a 2021 report released jointly by FNS and the USDA, the most common barriers SNAP participants face in achieving a healthy diet are lack of skills to prepare fresh meals, and lack of time to prepare meals from scratch. The goal of the "Veggie Butcher" intervention is to eliminate these common barriers through providing an on-site service to cut up fruits and vegetables, and provide culinary technical assistance.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Run the on-site Veggie Butcher Stand at selected DC Produce Plus market 
  • Set-up and break-down of Veggie Butcher Stand 
  • Work with customers to break down their purchased produce to their desired cut (dice, mince, julienne, etc.)
  • Educate customers about knife skills while breaking down their produce
  • Package and label cut produce while strictly adhering to food safety guidelines 
  • Ensure a clean and tidy environment 
  • Work with market administrator to seamlessly integrate Veggie Butcher Stand into Market 
  • Offer extraordinary customer service and culinary technical assistance experience to customers 
  • Create a vibrant community at the market by becoming familiar with the neighborhood and population, working with community partners, and creating a welcoming environment for all 

Experience and Qualifications: 

  • Culinary background with strong knife skills 
  • Ability to become food safety certified
  • Ability to work outdoors in summer temperatures 
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills 
  • Customer service skills
