Brewer Wheatland Spring

  • Date Posted May 17, 2023
  • Location Waterford, VA
  • Category Agriculture / Production
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Wheatland Spring is an estate brewery.

Family owned and operated, we work our 30 acre farm to grow grains, herbs, produce, capture native yeast, use our well water, and host honey bee hives for the sole purpose of offering the highest quality beer we’re capable of making.

We call our approach “Farming for Fermentation” and it allows us to create beer unique to Wheatland Spring that reflects the agricultural character of our farm.

Job description Winegrowers & makers, Cidergrowers & makers, Farmers, Brewers, hard workers encouraged to apply. The below is a flexible framework.

We’re growing and would love to connect.

Do you know a person that’s passionate about marrying farming and brewing? Someone with the highest standards for quality, combined with an adventurous spirit and the work ethic to deliver? An individual who’s driven to make outstanding estate and truly local beer? You’d describe them as someone with integrity, a team player, and kind soul? A person that wants to play a key role in growing a new tradition for beer in the U.S.? If so, we’d love to connect.

About Wheatland Spring

We regeneratively grow acres of barley and other grains next to the brewhouse. These cereals are bred for our climate, specifically for malting and brewing. We also grow experimental varieties, which means we brew with types of barley that have never been used before to make beer. Beyond grains grown at Wheatland Spring, we work directly with craft maltsters, small scale farmers, and producers in our region, focusing on ingredients and prioritizing the expression of each batch of beer. This takes a brewer with a special kind of creative flexibility, attention to detail, and desire to gain a deeper understanding of what field to glass really means.

We make classic styles and modern interpretations with intentional ingredient sourcing at the core. Designing and creating beers unique to our place and region are some of the most exciting offerings. Having such close relationships with neighbor farmers and our maltsters for custom craft malt affords the chance for a brewer to explore the future of U.S. lagers and farmhouse ales. For us, quality over category wins every time.

Beyond lagers and ales, the person will advance our barrel program. We ferment farmhouse ales in our coolship with yeast native to our farm we wild-capture. These beers are given time, patience, and a close eye to make sure we capture their full expression as they barrel age and bottle condition.
