The name of the farm is inspired by the famous proclamation in Alexandre Dumas’ Three Musketeers, which captures the heart of the project: to stand up for what is right and enrich our local communities, together. Through responsible farming practices, community workshops, a bountiful and biodiverse harvest, and delicious goods, AOOA aims to promote a rich local food culture, build a connected and more resilient community, and do its part to contribute to a healthier planet.

Livestock Manager

We are seeking an experienced, collaborative, skilled farmer to join the AOOA team as our Livestock Manager. The ideal candidate has at least 5 years experience managing sheep/goat and chicken operations, and is comfortable solving problems with foresight, ingenuity and an array of tools and equipment. A good fit for this position will be self-motivated, reliable and an excellent communicator, is passionate about rotational grazing, possesses the ability to develop efficient workflows and implement clear and transparent operational procedures, values farming as a way to enhance habitat for beneficial wildlife and is committed to building a stellar farm and work environment.

The Livestock Manager is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience (55-60K to start). Benefits include 401k, health insurance, PTO and sick days according to NYS standards, and farm goods discount. Weekend availability is required. Reports to the Farm Manager.

Description of current livestock operation:

• Sheep: 13 Karakuls which we shear twice per year. The fiber is processed and sold at our farm stand. We are working towards milking them to produce aged cheese and yogurt and are interested in growing the herd as the land permits.
• Hens: 300 laying hens rotationally grazing in the orchards. We sell their eggs at the farm stand.
• Meat Birds: We raise several rounds of meat birds and our goal is to improve the efficiency of that operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Daily care of all livestock including feed, water and fencing.
• Maintaining herd health, including preventative care.
• Developing and executing rotational grazing/pasture management plans. This includes but is not limited to weed and invasive species control within the silvopasture system, and development/implementation of general forage improvement projects.
• Co-manages silvopasture trees: planting, irrigating and tubing.
• Creates training protocols and SOPs to educate other staff and volunteers about how to care for the animals.
• Administrative responsibilities include data entry and record keeping, inventory tracking and the placement of orders, creating plans for improvements and future enterprises.
• Operates tractors and equipment safely and effectively. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment and supplies.
• Promotes continuous improvement of workplace organization, safety and practices.
• Maintains and improves on the farm's physical appearance so that it is presentable, welcoming and safe for all.

• Participates in farm programming (educational workshops, volunteer days, etc.).

Qualifications

• Demonstrated success and fluency in the management of livestock enterprises.
• A track record of excellent time management skills and effective organization around directing other staff members.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Positive attitude. You enjoy a challenge.
• Strong work ethic and excellent attention to detail.
• The ideal candidate is interested in a multi-year commitment and has a deep interest in building a farm and work environment they can take pride in.

Compensation

this position is: salaried, varies DOE, $55,000.00 - $60,000.00
