Job description
Bernie’s restaurant in East Grand Forks, MN, is seeking a full time head chef to start immediately. Bernie’s is the flagship restaurant of James Beard and Emmy-nominated Food Network host and New York Times bestselling cookbook author Molly Yeh. Since opening in October 2022, it has gained a large loyal following and attracted visitors from all over the country and Canada. It was one of Bon Appetit’s most anticipated restaurant openings, and is named Top Rated Food in North Dakota* by Open Table. Bernie’s features regional Midwest cuisine, a full bakery and bar, and local, seasonal ingredients on an all-day menu that showcases nostalgic elevated comfort food. This position would work closely with Molly, the kitchen staff, and the Bernie’s management team to maintain a high level of quality and develop and implement new menu items.
*Although we're in Minnesota, we are literal steps from the North Dakota border!
The primary responsibilities for this position include:
-Leading a kitchen team and ensuring a healthy, safe, and positive work environment
-Developing and implementing new menu items and specials
-Overseeing stocking and inventory of ingredients and materials
-Overseeing the hiring and training of new kitchen staff as needed
-Ensuring that the space meets and exceeds safe serving standards
-Overseeing catering, special orders, and events
-Sourcing local ingredients
The ideal candidate for this position has:
-Expert level leadership and management skills
-Extremely good organization, time management, and planning skills
-An excitement for and knowledge of Midwestern cuisine (or willingness to learn about it!)
-An excitement for and expert level knowledge of seasonal cooking
-An excitement and strong drive to source local ingredients
-Knowledge and certification in food safety and Minnesota service laws (or willingness to do so if coming from out of state)
-Great interpersonal skills
-Ability to multitask and work well and calmly under pressure
Required experience:
-5+ years in a restaurant kitchen
-3+ years in a management position

-East Grand Forks, Minnesota, is a border town with Grand Forks, North Dakota, and together they are often referred to as the Grand Cities. And they are truly grand places to live! They have charm, community, and a wonderful quality of life, and they are wonderful places for raising a family. The population is around 60,000, and includes the University of North Dakota, which is known for its hockey team and aviation program, a cute downtown area with local breweries and restaurants, and an amazing Target (a tourist destination for Canadian visitors, as the Canadian border is just a couple of hours away). Some of the best farmland in the world surrounds the area, where potatoes, wheat, corn, beans, and sugar beets are the most common crops. The Grand Forks airport is 15 minutes from Bernie’s, Fargo is a little over an hour, and Winnipeg is about 2 1/2 hours.
Compensation
this position is: salaried, varies DOE, $60,000.00 - $80,000.00
