We represent a collective of folks who live in the South Berkeley/North Oakland neighborhood and community. Some of us are without homes or shelter, some battle addiction, some were born and raised here, but regardless of our present state or economic status, we come together. We believe that positive energy, the drive to help others and a divine inspiration lead us to pull together as a unified community of Self Help, thus we provide help and services to individuals and families not merely to help them survive but to help them thrive!”

Job description
Produce Stand Coordinator Job Description
The role of the Produce Stand Coordinator is to facilitate the process of food rescue and distribution at the Melvin Dickson Memorial Produce Stand. We distribute approximately 4,000lbs of rescued produce weekly and it is the role of the Coordinator to be onsite at the plaza daily, receiving food donations, weighing and recording them, and placing donations appropriately on the stand. They are also responsible for communication and relationship maintenance with our food partners/donors, picking up donations regularly in a large refrigerated van (we provide). They exist as key personnel interacting with clients to explain our program, as well as aid them in shopping as necessary. The Produce Stand Coordinator works to keep things running smoothly, there is attention to both the Stand and our clients, staying aware of what community needs are and how to achieve that. Their role is to be present and helpful to coworkers and clients, filling in gaps and tasks on an as needed basis. Another major role is delegating tasks to volunteers and maintaining volunteer relationships. The Coordinator is present at weekly meetings sharing insight and ideas that come up throughout the week.

Biweekly produce retrieval from Berkeley Food Network, BFN is one of our largest partners, it is essential to maintain good communication and foster this relationship

Monday → order Tuesdays’ dry goods by 2pm

Tuesday → Arrive at BFN by 11:30am load van with dry goods order and rescued produce donation, bring goods to the plaza and delegate the stand stocking process

Friday → Shop for dry goods by 12:30pm, load them in the van, bring goods to the plaza and delegate the stand stocking process

Donation Retrieval and Tracking

Tuesdays → communicate with Food Shift coordinator and drive to Alameda to retrieve donation at 1pm, return and stock

Thursdays → receive, weigh, and stock donations from Dig Deep Farms at 11:30am and St. Phillips Temple at 12pm

Fridays → receive, weigh, and stock donation from St. Mary Prescott Church at 11am

Unlock shed and set out water and tables as needed

Hot Meal Days

Tuesdays and Thursdays the program serves fresh cooked hot meals at 2pm, the Produce Coordinator sets up essential supplies in preparation for volunteer servers such as tablecloths, utensils, hand washing stations, etc.
This is a part time position maxing at 25 hours a week. We are looking for an individual dedicated to our mission of food access, cultural enrichment, and community led solutions. The Produce Coordinator works in close collaboration with all members of the Self Help team, countless volunteers and community members, as well as our partners. They must exhibit strong work ethic, clear communication (in person, phone, email), work well with a variety of personalities, keep their cool in intense situations, be physically strong (moving lots of produce daily), as well be able to drive a large van. The role is paid Oakland minimum wage ($15.97/hr). We are prioritizing applicants that want a long term role and wish to grow with the Self Help Hunger Program. Job begins August 1st and training will be provided during the month of July, hiring immediately!
