Poughkeepsie Farm Project (PFP) is a farm-based non-profit organization committed to cultivating a just and sustainable food system in the Mid-Hudson Valley based on a 15-acre farm in the City of Poughkeepsie, NY. On our member-supported farm in the City of Poughkeepsie, we grow over 100,000 pounds of produce every year for our CSA and food access programs, provide hands-on educational programs, and work to improve access to healthy locally-grown food.

Our mission is to cultivate local leadership in sustainable farming, food access and education, and foster an inclusive, welcoming community for everyone.


Structural Overview: Poughkeepsie Farm Project utilizes a Shared Leadership structure rather than a traditional hierarchical organizational chart. The organization is led by 4 Co-Executive Directors.

Job description

Position Overview: The CSA Coordinator is a part-time program coordinator, part-time farmer responsible for coordinating PFP’s CSA offerings. The ideal candidate for this position has a passion for connecting community members from all walks of life to high-quality fresh food, who thrives building relationships with a multilingual and multicultural membership, and who will advance PFP’s goal to integrate its language justice work throughout its CSA programs. PFP’s CSA serves a largely Poughkeepsie-based membership, with a goal to increase membership among City of Poughkeepsie residents. 

 

PFP’s CSA includes 2 weekly market-style distributions, “Pick Your Own” opportunities for members, and a variety of options for buyers to access affordable and low-cost share options including CSA is a SNAP and Sponsored Shares. The ideal candidate is a person who takes great pride in managing the details of complex programs. The CSA coordinator serves as the lead organizer and point person for these elements both internally and externally. This position will collaborate closely with others in the organization tasked with Farm Production, Communications, and Administration and Finance to carry out the duties listed below. 

 

Position details:

    • Supervisor & Peer Review: Farm Production Director

  • Schedule: 
  • Through end of November: 40 hours/week 
  • Dec-Mid March: 18 hours/ week, Tues-Thurs
      • Mid-March-June: 40 hours/ week, Monday-Friday
  • June-November: 43 hours/week, Tuesday-Saturday (with some flexibility to switch to Mon-Fri, while holding responsibility for Saturday Distro organization) 
 

Responsibilities: 

 

CSA Programs administration and coordination

    • Collaborate with Office Manager to ensure all CSA billing-related concerns are addressed promptly
    • Coordinate enrollment, tracking and implementation of general CSA is a SNAP and Sponsored Share programs (grant funded free and subsidized shares)
  • Build, maintain and print weekly CSA check-in lists, including lists for add-on shares
  • Work with Office Manager to keep online Farm Store CSA items accurate and up to date
 

CSA communications & customer service, and administration

  • Coordinate marketing and outreach for all CSA programs, including CSA is a SNAP and Sponsored Share
  • Collaborate with Farm Director to develop and disseminate weekly CSA newsletter 
  • Act as lead internal point person for all CSA-related inquiries, including receive calls, responding to voicemails in a timely manner, and maintaining a clean and responsive inbox for the primary CSA email, HelloCSA@farmproject.org
  • Work with Farm Director and Admin team to meet CSA membership goals by helping to generate marketing materials for social media and newsletters, and doing occasional tabling outreach to raise awareness about PFP’s CSA offerings
 

CSA Add-ons

  • Manage sales and ordering of Add-on Shares such as eggs, cheese, yogurt, berries and fruit  from our partner farms through effective collaboration with the Admin and Finance Circle (includes providing expense coding and invoicing
  • Maintain inventory and organize add-on products for the upcoming distributions
 

CSA Distribution Support

  • Serve as primary organizer of twice weekly CSA distributions from June-November and once every-other week Winter CSA distributions from December-March.
  • Maintain all CSA supplies; scales, bags, tables, tent, etc.
  • With staff, interns, and volunteers, manage set-up, break down, and inventory of distribution produce, restocking, and maintaining a welcoming environment
  • Schedule, train, and supervise volunteers, workshare members, and Barter share members to help at distribution
  • Communicate with the Farm Director about distribution needs and possible improvements
 

Farm Production

  • Work in collaboration with staff members to implement the annual agricultural production plan consisting of growing, harvesting, and distributing over 100,000 lbs of vegetables, herbs, small fruit, and flowers using CNG organic methods.
  • Guide and mentor interns, CSA members, and volunteers in various farming related tasks.
  • Perform various rotating farm duties, which include record keeping, washing, weekend greenhouse duty and maintenance.

Qualifications: 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to convey complex information in a clear manner 
  • Either experience with or willingness to learn and navigate online platforms that facilitate our work (examples: Shopify, Jotform, Squarespace, Mailchimp)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Ability to self-supervise and self-organize, and manage multiple tasks in an effective and efficient manner 
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail 
  • Two full seasons on vegetable farms, preferably ones that use organic methods
  • Interest in tractor and equipment use. Tractor experience is a plus.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly and kneel/crouch for long periods of time
  • Valid Driver’s License. Because our business is located in an area without access to reliable public transportation, we only recommend that applicants with access to a vehicle apply.
  • Ability to connect and build relationships with people of all backgrounds
  • Proactive participation in our organization’s effort to uplift all workers as leaders, and cultivate an environment that uplifts LGBTQ+ people and Black, Indigenous and People of Color
  • Enthusiasm for Shared Leadership, and willing to act as a leader in organization-wide conversations about shared leadership structure and deepening our internal and external social and food justice work
  • Spanish language skills a plus
 

Compensation and benefits: 

  • Salary: $20/hr
  • A whole-share full season CSA share , access to our Pick-Your-Own fields,  and access to discounted “Share Add-ons”. 
  • Generous paid time off starting at 21 days of vacation time in the first year, and 10 sick days

Compensation
