Liberty Prairie is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Grayslake, Illinois. Our mission is to build skills and pathways toward land, human, and local economic health. Liberty Prairie manages Prairie Crossing Conservation Farm, a 94 acre annual, perennial, and natural land area within the Prairie Crossing community. We sell our organic vegetables in our Community Supported Agriculture Program and at our retail Farm Store located in Prairie Crossing Station Square at 970 Harris Road Suite 1B.
Job description
Liberty Prairie Farm Store opened November 11, 2023. The daily operations of the store (2024 hours to be 7 days a week from 9-5) will be led by volunteers. We are seeking a person to coordinate this experience, ensure the store is staffed consistently, create a community within the volunteer cadre, and to capture the value of the volunteer experience as well as that of our store patrons. This role requires excellent time and project management skills, adept communication, and the ability to jump between tasks with a positive attitude. Candidates will need to be able to handle all farm store tasks, provide customer care, contribute to Liberty Prairie’s Communication and Development activities, and provide a generally helpful presence on our team.
Essential Qualities
The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for managing, growing and developing a successful volunteer program to staff the Farm Store. The volunteer options at Liberty Prairie will grow to include farm based activities seasonally.
This person should be comfortable with a high-level of responsibility, managing people, general project tasks, be comfortable with technology/database systems, and excel at both verbal/written communication.
To be successful in this role a candidate should be professional and attentive while also being accurate and dependable. Flexibility and a positive attitude to adapt to changing needs and priorities is essential. A demonstrated passion for local food, agricultural/environmental education and community development preferred.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in volunteer coordination, project management, or similar role
- Demonstrated organizational and team building skills
- Strong knowledge of Google Suite, database programs, and social media
- Experience with nonprofit structure and fundraising (preferred)
- Spanish language proficiency (desired)
Hours and Compensation
This is an hourly position ($20-$22 depending on experience) that averages 32-35 hours weekly requiring weekends. Reporting to the Managing Director, this in-office (at the Farm Store) function requires availability Thursday - Monday (half day shifts Monday/Thursday with longer hours on Thursday during the growing season).

Documentation establishing your ability to work in the United States is required along with the submission of fingerprints and the subsequent successful background check. We work with school groups on the farm and some districts require background checks. Student programs will expand such that some volunteers will be student interns in the store. We want to set up our growing team for the long term and want all functions to be able to work along students as those relationships grow and expand.
Please note we require staff to be vaccinated for Covid unless they are exempted by law.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
