Company description

Mossy Stone Farms is a small "no-till" organic vegetable farm located in the northern Catskill mountains of New York State. We grow organic vegetables, mushrooms, flowers, and rice on several acres using small scale methods. We sell our produce at a local Farmer's Market, run a small CSA, and supply greens to a few restaurants nearby. We host farm to table dinners in the summer, and farming and rice workshops.

Internship description

Full time paid "live-in" farmhand & apprentice

We are seeking a full time live-in farmhand for the 2024 season starting in April, continuing through October. You'll be immersed in all details of a small market garden / vegetable farm, including organic vegetable, mushroom, fruit, flower and rice production & marketing.

You'll also take part in assisting in our Farm to Table dinners, and producing educational content for social media.

Your duties will include harvesting, washing and packing vegetables and CSA bags; building and maintaining grow beds; preparing and seeding grow beds; building and sculpting rice paddies and terraces; rice planting and harvesting; producing and harvesting shiitake mushrooms; servicing farmer's markets customers; mowing, land clearing and digging; and more weeding then you've ever done in your life!

You'll also be involved in the building of a permacultural demonstration site, helping us terraform, build ponds, pollard and copice, manage a small forest and wetlands, build hugelkulture mounds, make compost, and much more.

You will be expected to work 4 days per week, 8 hours per day, (which includes one half day at the market). This job requires heavy lifting (rocks, bags of peat moss, that sort of thing), and bending over a great deal. You'll be sore at the end of the day, but enjoy every moment of the experience.

No experience necessary, but always appreciated. This position pays commensurate with experience and hours worked.

You'll live with us in our farmhouse in a spacious room with your own 1/2 bath on our quiet road half way up a wooded mountain.

You don't need a car.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
