Internship description
Stonewood Farm is seeking a full-time seasonal apprentice for the 2024 growing season. We are a small-scale organic vegetable and flower farm, located in Millbrook, NY. Stonewood Farm is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization committed to charitable giving and education, and value community outreach and expanding access to high quality produce as a core part of our mission. To support Stonewood Farm’s food pantry and other community outreach programs, we host on-farm Dinners as well as cooking classes during the season.
Our apprenticeship is a unique opportunity as the individual will work directly with the Farm Managers and participate in all aspects of the farm, with room to explore tasks and topics that may be of particular interest. The ideal candidate for this position will have an interest in organic farming, a love of manual labor and a willingness to work efficiently in all weather conditions. They will have at least some general knowledge or experience in agriculture or small-scale farming. A desire to work on a very small, close-knit team as well as an ability to work independently is a must. Ideally, they will have a passion for our mission, including a desire to be a part of our community outreach projects and increasing access to locally grown, high quality organic produce.
The overall goal of the apprentice program is to provide individuals interested in organic farming with experience and skills that will support their path into the world of farming. By the end of the growing season, the apprentice will be familiar with a wide range of agricultural topics including: crop management, vegetables and flowers, chicken care, cover cropping, season extension, harvesting and packaging, delivery and direct sales, non-profit operation, soil health and composting.
This position is 5 days a week (M-F) beginning at 7:30 AM and ending at 4:30 PM, with some flexibility and a one-hour lunch break. Season runs April/May to September/October with exact start and end dates to be determined as it gets closer to the start of the season.
Compensation is $18/hour with housing or a housing stipend included.
Interviews will begin January 15th, applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
