Who We Are: The gardens are focused on providing fresh, nutritious food for tribal Community Members and the Community’s food institutions, as well as keeping culturally-relevant foods alive and available. We run a small TSA program (Tribally Supported Agriculture), provide food through events, and participate in various types of outreach and educational programming with youth and adults. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community contributes to causes, organizations and tribes across the region, state and country. The SMSC has donated more than $350 million to organizations and causes, provided $500 million in economic development loans to other tribes, and contributed millions more to support regional governments and infrastructure. The SMSC's Native Green initiative annually diverts hundreds of tons of waste from landfills, has implemented compostable containers throughout our properties and restored hundreds of acres of prairie land. Come join the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community as a Farm Laborer with Wozupi Tribal Gardens! Wozupi Tribal Gardens is looking to hire seasonal farm laborers for the 2024 growing season to work at a tribally-owned, certified organic farm in Prior Lake, Minnesota. In this role, farm crew members work primarily in vegetable production and orchard maintenance, with some opportunities to work with poultry and native foods. In this seasonal position you will be harvesting, packing, planting, weeding, and landscape maintenance. Both full-time and part-time opportunities available. Starting pay $15 an hour.
Job Overview: Primary tasks include harvesting, packing, planting, weeding, mowing, pruning, and mulching. In this low-till farm, mulches and cover crops are used extensively and most tasks are done with hand tools or small mechanized equipment. The farm is focused on meeting the needs of tribal members and the Community’s food institutions. Applicants should expect to work hard and keep up a strong pace in all types of weather. We appreciate motivated people that work well with others, have a strong attention to detail, and enjoy challenging themselves to consistently deliver better results, and faster (but not hectic). The position requires flexibility and occasional overtime.
Job Requirements:
- Experience working outdoors in strenuous environmental conditions.
- Ability to use hand tools, including knives, safely and efficiently.
- Team player with a can-do attitude and attention to detail.
- Experience with farm machinery is preferred.
- Experience on farms is preferred.
- A valid driver's license is required to fulfill the job duties.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
