Overview:
Equal Plates Projects seeks a dynamic, community-oriented Sous Chef with strong leadership skills to join our Central UMC Kitchen team in the preparation of scratch-made, locally sourced meals to share with vulnerable communities in Asheville and Western North Carolina (WNC).
This is a unique opportunity in a non-profit commercial kitchen that supports the local food system for the benefit of all, regardless of income level or background.
This role reports to the Head Chef of our Central UMC Kitchen (Chef Chad Holmes) and entails working closely with volunteers, other cooks, and farmers in a highly collaborative team environment.
The ideal candidate will be willing to work 1 weekend day shift.

- Embraces welcoming, orienting and managing volunteers as a key part of their role
- Has experience in a commercial kitchen and/or culinary degree
- Has experience in catering and/or contexts that prepare large volumes of food
- Has experience and passion for working with whole ingredients
- Is comfortable managing multiple priorities
- Demonstrates strong problem solving and decision making skills
- Shares the vision of a new, local food system that centers equity and community
Work Requirements:
- Must be a resident of or able to relocate to Western North Carolina
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends
