Gould Farm, founded in 1913, is the first residential therapeutic community in the nation dedicated to helping adults with mental health and related challenges move toward recovery and independence through community living, meaningful work, and clinical care.

We refer to our residents as “guests” and welcome them into a supportive community environment made up of staff and their families most of whom live on the 700-acre campus. We help adults with depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, and other challenges rebuild and regain their lives. Gould Farm offers a full continuum of services that includes individual sessions with a dedicated clinician.

Our programs in both Boston and the Berkshires provide transitional support for guests ready to live more independently. Vocational counseling is available for those preparing to return to school or work.

Job description

Kitchen Manager, Gould Farm

Join a dynamic team dedicated to healing, recovery, and reimagining mental health treatment. The Kitchen Manager works as a member of a multidisciplinary team that contributes to each guest’s treatment and recovery. Reporting to the Work Program Director, the Kitchen Manager is responsible for the operation of the Gould Farm kitchen facility, which feeds approximately 60 to 100 people per day, three meals per day. The Kitchen Manager strives to ensure an operation that meets a variety of dietary needs, embraces seasonality, and incorporates products of the Farm, prepared in a way that promotes health and wellness for guests and members of the Gould Farm community. The Manager oversees menu planning, inventory management, and the general operations of the kitchen, including staff scheduling; maintenance of a clean, safety-conscious, and efficient work environment; and leadership of the guest work program. This position is responsible for the promotion of the values of Gould Farm, reflected in the Mission Statement and participation as a contributing member of the community.

Kitchen Operations

• Assume a leadership role in effectively preparing nutritious meals and operating a dynamic, safe, and efficient work environment.
• Maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the kitchen, upholding local, state, and federal health codes regulations, and standards.
• Plan weekly menus that adhere to the highest nutritional standards and afford options to serve a variety of dietary needs.
• Plan and prepare meals for special holidays and events.
• Schedule kitchen staff, volunteers, and guests during both work program and non-work program hours.
• Order food and supplies, and manage inventory, including coordinating with other departments at the Farm to ensure integration of Farm products into food service.
• Provide leadership to the Gould Farm commitment to health and wellness for guests, including working with the Farm wellness committee and staff, and responding to feedback from the larger community regarding food and nutrition-related issues.

Training and Support of Guests in Work Program

• Creating, managing, and maintaining a supportive and challenging work program for guests.
• Participate in treatment planning and implementation related to skill development of guests.
• Explore and develop new recipes that will support skill-building for guests and feature the use of Gould Farm resources/products reflecting the mission.
• Train guests in safe food handling and sanitation.
• Effectively communicating with other teams about the flow of resources and products for use in kitchen production, specifically Bakery, Garden, and Farm.

Administration

• Meet weekly with the Work Program Director for ongoing supervision to support professional growth and competency.
• Serve in a leadership role, supervising and supporting kitchen staff, volunteers, and per diem staff.
• Attend and participate in regularly scheduled staff and community meetings.
• Participate in ongoing training to meet performance expectations.
• On-Call duties after 6 months of service.

Qualifications: This position requires residency at the Farm in employer-provided housing as a condition of employment. Should suitable housing not be available at the time of hire, an agreement to move to the Farm as soon as suitable housing is available is a contingency of employment. 3-5 years experience in food preparation and management, cooking for large groups, menu planning, scheduling and supervising the work of others. Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills and a team player. Must be willing to promote the values and spirit of Gould Farm, to actively participate as a member of the community and to continuously seek ways to improve, both self and function.

Compensation: Salary range is $40,000-$60,000, based on experience, with a great benefits package including medical/dental insurance (employer pays 85% of premiums and up to 100% of deductible), life insurance, generous Paid Time Off (PTO includes 5 weeks of vacation and holidays the first two years and 6 weeks thereafter), generous sick time accrual, 401K, low cost on-campus housing including utilities, generous food benefit including prepared meals 3X a day and access to basic pantry items and Farm made products.
