Farm Manager Position Overview
We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for a full-time, year-round position as a Market Farm Manager. This role is central to our operations at our vibrant Market Vegetable farm and our esteemed small-scale, high-quality beef operation. Our farm is set against a serene hillside homestead, where we practice sustainable and low-till agriculture, focusing on a diverse range of vegetables and pasture-raised Dexter cattle.

The Market Farm Manager will enjoy the comfort and convenience of a newly built, on-farm apartment as part of the compensation package. This modern living space boasts just under 1,000 sq ft, featuring:
- A comfortable 1 bedroom and a supplementary 2nd bedroom (non-egress)
- A full bathroom, mudroom, and pantry for additional storage
- Hardwood floors throughout, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere
- Air Conditioning for year-round comfort
- A new kitchen equipped with the latest appliances
- Utilities included, offering a hassle-free living experience (Please note: furniture and furnishings are not included.)
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be instrumental in:
- Assisting with the development of the annual crop plan and compiling seasonal supply lists.
- Managing the seed starting process, including sowing in trays/flats, ensuring proper watering, and preparing for transplanting (e.g., mowing, applying compost, and other soil amendments).
- Conducting direct seeding and transplanting activities, utilizing both manual techniques and equipment such as the Jang Seeder.
- Implementing trellising and pruning practices to support healthy plant growth.
- Overseeing the harvest, cleaning, and packaging of vegetables for distribution across various sales channels.
- Managing irrigation and fertilization schedules, utilizing an integrated approach of drip tape and sprinkler systems to optimize water use and nutrient application.
- Executing weed and pest control strategies within crop beds and pathways, employing tools such as stirrup hoes and cultivators, as well as preventive measures like row covers.
- Maintaining farm grounds through regular mowing and weed management.
- Coordinating the delivery of vegetable orders to ensure timely and efficient distribution.
- Overseeing compost management practices to enhance soil fertility and support sustainable farming operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Daily feeding and watering of cattle and horses, along with stall maintenance (help is available)
- Health management tasks such as ear tagging and administering deworming injections (typically twice a year)
- Coordinating services such as Farrier and Veterinary visits as required
- Pasture rotation and maintenance to ensure optimal grazing conditions
- Fence inspection and repair to secure livestock
- Management of the Aerated Static Pile (ASP) Composting system to enhance soil health
- Direct marketing initiatives for beef products to consumers
- Fertilization of pastures and hay fields to support sustainable feed production
- Oversight of hay production, including cutting, bailing, or coordinating with contractors
- General farm maintenance such as brush hogging and trimming to maintain the farm’s aesthetics and health
